Hi

Well no DNA needed for me but  I shall watch the replies with interest. My G/G/G/G/ Granddad was John Johnston from Cummertrees born 1724, he married a Janet Pool and they had a daughter called Mary Johnston, she married a Joseph Jardine from Annan , they in turn had Four children and the eldest William Jardine ( a draper ) also married a Johnstone, she was called Elizabeth.

I would love to know more about your family connection, Johnstone/ Johnston's in Annan have a great history , which I am sure you have googled and are informed about.

Hi there,

Thank you for your message.

I'm actually researching the Johnstone family for an American client. Her family emigrated to America via Ireland from Scotland at the end of the 18th century. The family have had their DNA checked and identified Annandale as the location from where their family originated.

I've logged your response and will certainly let you know if there is a connection.

Best regards

Ian

Hi Ian,

Again no DNA but I too will watch this thread as my Johnstone's came from the Annan area.

4x granddad John Johnston(e) c1755 was a Joiner by trade. 3x granddad Francis c1789 (Dryfesdale/Lochmaben) married Janet Alison 1807 (Lochmaben). Second wife Catherine Irving b1789. 2x granddad Carlyle 1831 (Whinneyrigg, Annan). G/Granddad Francis 1856 (Graitney).

Just a short history of the family line.

Regards,

Ian J

This statistic may be of some interest.

The Johnstone name and its variations are found in many Dumfriesshire graveyards, but as has already been stated, the main concentration is in Annandale.

The following data is extracted from the DGFHS database of Memorial Inscriptions.

Johnston   stones 518  burials 1095
Johnstone   –“--   347   --“--    720
Johnson      --“--   13    --“--     18
Johnstoun   --“--    2     --“--       4
Johnstoune  --“--   1     --“--        1

I counted 16 memorials recording both the Johnstone and Johnston spelling on the same stone.
