1878 NSW ER for THE BOGAN, and for the Dubbo Police District

Edward FLOOD, senior of Sydney, freehold at Marthaguy Creek
John FLOOD, of Dubbo, residence Macquarie River

Hi Majm,
Yes it is. I have been down to NLA, viewed the fiche of their marriage cert, nothing extra noted.
The ones that you mentioned are not my line at all.
Death cert states buried in the Catholic section Forbes Cemetery. Have been to F/H Forbes he is in an unmarked grave along with his wife Mary Ann.
Any suggestions where else I might venture for research?
Thanks Natalie :(

As it seems your chap was not a long time Forbes District chap,  where do you suspect he was living in the 1870s and for those 40 years in NSW up until 1886 ?
The ones that you mentioned are not my line at all.

1886 - 40 years puts his arrival PRIOR to the Gold Rushes and AFTER transportation of convicts to NSW had effectively ceased.    Many of the arrivals into NSW in the 1840s were Bounty Emigrants.

Have you exhausted the arrivals in that 1840s decade ?  Can the surname be mis-read and be wrongly transcribed ?
http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/guides-and-finding-aids/nrs-lists/nrs-5316

Who was the informant for that 1886 dc?  From you own research, can you form a view as to if that informant's own knowledge be reliable re that 40 years in NSW?

Cheers,  JM

Hi JM,
Yes I have searched some of the arrivals, but not extensively, years 1847-47 are missing, so will
troll other sites.
The informant for his death in 1886 was his son John Flood. who was a second dealer in Forbes.
Have followed the places where all his children were born.
James b 1853 Sydney,Catherine b 1854 Sydney d 1854 Parramatta,Mary b 1856 Syndey,Annie b 1863 ?John b 1866 Carcoar,Margaret b 1869 ?, Elizabeth b 1872 Grenfell d1872 Bushmans Lead District of Forbes.
As yet have not been able to find anything about him in these areas.
Thanks for your interest in my research
Regards Natalie

Hi there,

Do you have a copy of the birth registration for Elizabeth FLOOD, likely the youngest of John and Mary FLOODs children.  Her birth is noted at NSW BDM as in the Grenfell District, and I can see a likely infant death the following year for Elizabeth FLOOD registered at Forbes.
Grenfell District Birth 1872 # 7390
Forbes District Death 1873 # 4107 .

If you do not have a copy, may I suggest you consider obtaining an official transcription.  It should provide you with details about Elizabeth’s parents and all her older siblings.

Re her parents:  I would expect a full official transcription to include
:) her full name, sex, date and place of birth (so you learn where her parents were living at the time of her birth),
:) her Mum’s details, including her full name, maiden name, age, occupation, place of birth.  Same for her father’s details.
:)  :)  (of course, when Mum is the informant it is likely her details, given first hand to the clerk to record, will be fairly accurate, same when Dad gives his, but it is important to learn which parent actually registered the birth, to in turn decide who much ‘weight’ to put on the accuracy of the info provided.
:)  :) You will also get the date and place of parent’s marriage (so you can check how good a memory for the informant) and the names and ages of the living children of the marriage, and the gender of those who had succumbed before Elizabeth’s birth. (Again, a good way to test the accuracy of the memory of the informant).

Remember that by 1870s, it is likely the verbal info given to the clerks when registering the births will be given in an admin process that is familiar to both the parents and to the clerks, afterall, civil registration had commenced in  1856, and it seems there were quite a number of children listed on the 1886 dc.

The informant for his death in 1886 was his son John Flood. who was a second dealer in Forbes.
Have followed the places where all his children were born.
James b 1853 Sydney,
Catherine b 1854 Sydney d 1854 Parramatta,
Mary b 1856 Syndey,
Annie b 1863 ?
John b 1866 Carcoar,
Margaret b 1869 ?,
Elizabeth b 1872 Grenfell d1872 Bushmans Lead District of Forbes.

I have also posted info on Natalie’s thread about the British Army in NSW 1840-1850 re John FLOOD aka CAHILL.
