McGregor Family
« on: Friday 11 October 13 21:57 BST (UK) »
Hi
I've hit a bit of a brick wall with this one and need some help, a fresh pair of eyes will probably see something obvious that I'm missing.
I have the family on the 1841 Census in Lamb Street, Hamilton as Follows
McGregor, William,      Aged 40  Cotton Hand Loom Weaver.
McGregor, Isibella       Aged 35
McGregor, Mary,         Aged 15
McGregor, Daniel,       Aged 15
McGregor, William,      Aged 12 (He is my Ancestor)
McGregor, John,          Aged 10
McGregor, James,       Aged 8
McGregor, Jean,          Aged 6
McGregor, Isibella,      Aged 5
McGregor, Archibald,   Aged 3

All born in Lanarkshire according to the census

I do have William Aged 22 living in Chapleton with wife Margaret and son William aged  6months on the 1851 census but I cant seem to find the rest of the family.

I believed Isibella's  maiden name was Robertson as I have a copy of William (born c1829) death cert where it names his mother as Isabella McGregor M/S Robertson.

I'm wondering if they left the country or something?
I'd love to find out what happened to them all and if there's a post 1855 death cert for either Isibella Robertson or her husband William McGregor it may have there parents names and allow me to go back another generation.

Any help would be greatfully received
thanks for reading

I wonder if Isabella died between 1841 and 1851 and William re-married?
The 1851 census for Hamilton (I only have the index) district 4 page 7 has this family -
William McGregor aged 54 born Hamilton.
Margaret McGregor aged 46 born Hamilton.
Isabella McGregor aged 13 born Hamilton.

Also in the 1851 census for Hamilton, district 2, page 45
John McGregor aged 59
Agnes McGregor aged 61
Daniel McGregor aged 26
John McGregor aged 23
(all born in Hamilton).

Worth checking out the full entries to find the relationships.
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.
Leonard - County Donegal & Glasgow.

FREECEN http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl throws up a couple of likely results in 1851.......

Looks like Mary is married to David Watson and Jean is living with them as MacGregor at Orchard Street, Hamilton. I think Mary may have married again to a Robert Robertson.

There is a James McGregor age 18 born Hamilton working as a porter at Mason's Hall, Hamilton.

There is a marriage between a James McGregor (who I think might be 'your' James) and Helen Bell in 1857.

A look at the marriage entries should give parents info.

There's a Bent Cemetery burial record, which appears to be that of your William McGregor:

McGregor, William, age 73, date of death 27 October 1870, date of burial 29 October 1870, Weaver, Hamilton

Could this be your John McGregor?

McGregor, John, age 74, date of burial 3 May 1904, 7 Haddow St., Hamilton

Cheers,

Rodeo

I cant find a death for Isabella or a Marriage between William and Margaret between 1841 and 1851.

I've had a look at the census and the 2nd lot are definitely not the same family - although I think there may be a link somewhere as all the common family names are there.

Thanks for taking time to look :)

Both the William and John that Rodeo has come across are the two (father and son ) from the census above.

And the James McGregor who married Helen Bell I'm not sure if he is mine as they got married in Bathgate and there are no parents names on the register, it says NOT KNOWN in the box where the names should be. :(

I wish my ancestors would stop hiding from me, its driving me mad  ;)

William and Isabella both died before 1855. On the passenger list of their son John Mcgregor who went to Australia (dated 24 Feb 1855) he states that his parents William and Isabella are both dead.

I assume we are related because this is my family as well.
