Hadleigh Parish - CALVER
« on: Friday 11 October 13 06:01 BST (UK) »
Hi!

Is anyone able to look up this marriage between John CALVER and Lydia ALEXANDER;

marriage:   18 Jan 1828 —Hadleigh, Suffolk, England
spouse:   John Calver
record title:   England Marriages, 1538–1973
groom's name:   John Calver
bride's name:   Lydia Alexander
marriage date:   18 Jan 1828
marriage place: Hadleigh, Suffolk, England
indexing project (batch) number:   M13241-1
system origin:   England-EASy
source film number:   9

I'm wondering if the parents are mentioned, or even the witnesses? I'm guessing if they are listed it would be in the above record, but I'd just like to check as I've hit a brickwall with both of them.

Will post the following in a separate message:

John CALVER who was born between 1797-1801 in Newbourn, Suffolk, so need birthdate and parents. The same for his wife Lydia ALEXANDER, born about 1811 in Charsfield, Suffolk.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Newbourn & Charsfield - CALVER & ALEXANDER

I'm trying to research past my 4th great grandparents John CALVER and Lydia ALEXANDER.

John CALVER who was born between 1797-1801 in Newbourn, Suffolk, so need birthdate and parents.

The same for his wife Lydia ALEXANDER, born about 1811 in Charsfield, Suffolk.

I also can't find John's death. I definitely know he died between late 1852 and 1861. And extremely good chance in Ipswich. The FreeBMD lists a John CALVER who I think is him;
Name:   John Calver
Date of Registration:   Apr-May-Jun 1855
Registration District:   Ipswich
Inferred County:   Suffolk
Volume:   4a
Page:   _9_

Does anyone have access to look this up?

Thanks for any assistance!

There only seemed to be one Calver family born Newbourne at the relevant period and likewise only one Alexander family in Charsfield.

Online coverage for these 2 parishes doesn't seem to be brilliant as far as I can tell.

Jacob Calver married Martha Turtle (?) 4/2/1802 Newbourne - so, if John b.1797 was their son he was born prior to marriage.

John Tuttle (?) bp.5/4/1797 Suffolk (all it says on familysearch), son of Martha Tuttle.

I would say this is your John Calver, born 5 years prior to marriage.

A James and Mary Alexander seemed to be in Charsfield at the relevant time.   Seemed to have left the parish by 1841.   I found a burial in 1816 Charsfield for Mary Alexander (bc.1779) so wonder where James then went.

Hi,

I can't help with any baptisms but,
In the Suffolk Burial Index (ex Suffolk FHS) there are these two burials;

7-4-1855 John Calver age 58 buried in Ipswich St.Margaret

2-4-1884 Lydia Calver age 73 wd died 29-3, Bond Street. buried Ipswich Cemetery

There are many "John Calvers" but the one above seems to agree with the details you listed.
Similarly, there are a few Lydia Calvers but this one appears to match also.

Was John previously married?  The 1841 census shows 2 children born before 1828

1851 shows Lydia b 1807 Charfield and John b 1797 Newburn

1881 shows Lydia born 1813 and she dies in 1884 aged 73 so b 1811 (ish)

Thanks for replying Annette and Carole.

Not sure if those are my family Annette.

The reason I list John CALVER's date of birth as 1797-1801 is because in the 1841 Census it says he was born 1801 and in the 1851 it says he was born 1797.

Carole - yes, that is this family in the census.

Hopefully someone has access to the original marriage records to see if it has more details than I list in my original post.

Hi

1841 ages from 16yrs upwards were rounded down to the nearest 5yrs

Quote
Instructions to enumerators on the 1841 census

"Write the age of  every person under 15 years of age as it is stated to you.
For persons aged 15 years and upwards, write the lowest of the term of 5
years within which the age is.
Thus -for persons aged
15 years and under 20 write 15;
20 years and under 25 write 20;
