Private George William Shaw - Which Regiment?
« on: Thursday 10 October 13 19:02 BST (UK) »
Dear All,

A friend of mine is working hard on a project to ensure that all local men who served in the First World War are remembered on a new memorial marking 100 years since it began, next year, 2014. He has come across several instances where he does not know the full information for particular individuals.

This is the most recent query he has mentioned, I wonder if anyone can help clarify ..... I quote his own words ......

"I am frustrated at not knowing the Regiment of George William Shaw who joined  the army  29 May 1917 aged 19 (a Cromford man). I have letters to Private 43342, D Coy 3rd Platoon (but no regiment) His first posting was to Manor Farm, Godney, nr Wells then to Stranton Rink, West Hartlepool I cannot find him in the usual search places. Suggestions welcomed"

Any ideas anyone?

Regards,

Alan

Trevor,

Thanks for replying. I'm not sure whether he has checked Ancestry out, I guess that he will have done, as he describes 'having checked the usual sources', but I will ask him. I just had a quick look myself and couldn't quickly see a George William Shaw, or even a George W Shaw that fitted the bill.

Regards,

Alan

Hello again,

Since my previous post I have found that the Durham Light Infantry, or at least part of that Regiment were stationed in Stranton, West Hartlepool at a time that would fit the enquiry that my friend is making. Does anyone know anything about the Durham Light Infantry at this period of the war, and what the unit at Stranton may have been doing?

Yours hopefully,

Alan
