Marriage Look up Scarborough, St Mary
« on: Thursday 10 October 13 18:12 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am hoping someone can help me out and check out a marriage at Scarborough, St Mary. The marriage took place on 12 November 1853 between James Walker Hague and Mary Sedman (got this from a newspaper announcement). I would really like to find out Mary Sedman's age and father's name as she never appears on the census living with her husband so I am having trouble getting any further with her.

Keeping my fingers crossed! Thank you

Hi,

Hoping to pop into the records office later this week, so if no-ones had a look for you before then will be happy to take a look for you (if I make it there ;D).

Just wondering are you certain this is your Mary Sedman? appears on FreeBMD there are 3 marriages for Mary Sedman in Scarborough in 1853 - one 2nd quarter, the other two in the 3rd quarter. Please ignore this if your approaching from the James Walker Hague angle.

Cheers

Thank you Kev that would be great - yes it is James Walker Hague I am interested in. Mary is very elusive - I think I may have found her living in Scarborough in 1871 as Mary Pearson the "wife" of Francis Pearson. They are lodgers along with a six year old girl Emily Hague. Emily Hague was allegedly the daughter of James Walker Hague and Mary and was baptised in Manchester when she was 2 years old. In later censuses she usually states she was born in London. My theory is that Mary left James prior to the 1861 census, ran away to London and had Emily, repented and returned briefly to her husband before going off again with Francis Pearson and landing back in Scarborough. I cannot find her in 1861 or after 1871 and until I know more about her from the marriage I cannot identify her in 51 or 41 either! So as you can imagine I would love to have the details of her marriage  ;D

Hi, popped into the records office today, the marriage at St Marys Scarborough on 12/11/1853

James Walker Hague age 27, a batchelor, living Scarborough a basket maker, father James Hague a sailor married Mary Sedman age 20, spinster, also living Scarborough, no trade listed, father Thomas Sedman a butcher.

Appears both signed although signatures very similar, witnessed by William Hague & Frances Robinson.

were married by banns, George Hogarth (what looks like Hogarth) curate.

Hope it helps

Brilliant Kev thank you! I had narrowed it down to two Mary's and one had a father Thomas a butcher so that is excellent news.

I am based in the North West and visit the Lancashire Record Office on a regular basis so if you ever have any ancestors from up north you need checking get in touch and I'll see if I can return the favour.

Thanks again  ;D

Glad it helps you, give me a shout if you need anymore lookups, I'm often at the East Yorkshire records office (Scarborough's records are deposited there).

I do have relatives from your area, have found them living just outside Manchester & in Cheshire.
