Lottie DELBRIDGE and Charles ROBERTS, Camborne
« on: Thursday 10 October 13 06:48 BST (UK) »
Charles Roberts was born in Camborne in abotu 1883 and Lottie Delbridge was born in Johnsville, California.  She came back to England about 1890 after her father died in California.  She came with her mother, Mary Jane Ingram Delbridge and her siblings Thomas, John and Prudence Caroline "Carrie" Ingram.  Any information about this couple's life and children would be appreciated.

There were 4 births in June quarter 1911 Redruth which was before mmn was shown so possibly one of these was their child.

Would there be any hope of finding death dates for either Lottie or Charles?  I've looked through some files but find no mention of them.  I have only seen her name as 'Lottie,' never short for anything, though that doesn't prove anything.  Could have been Charlotte or??

But have you tried looking at FreeBMD as has been recommended for vital events searches?

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

She married as Lottie so one would expect to find her death as Lottie Roberts.

There is a death in Redruth in early 1953 at age 67. This seems like a reasonable possibility, since the children were born in that district. Does a dob of c1886 match her age to your knowledge, or per census records?

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X7L1-S6T

Seems to. Aged 26 in the 1911 census, so if that death record is the correct one, it suggests a birth in early 1885, and she had not yet had her birthday in 1953 when she died.

Then you can search at FreeBMD for deaths of Charles Roberts in Redruth reg dist and see whether one matches up with a dob of c1883. Since he had no middle initial, the best match might seem to be 1918 aged 36, rather sadly. That would suggest he was born in 1882 and had had his birthday in the year he died.

It's a little hard to tell whether you notice answers to your questions ...

Thank you all so much for all of your help and for your willingness to search:  Janey Canuck, Annette 7 and KGarrad.  I appreciate that you have done this information searching and making of suggestions for a total stranger.  I, also, have enjoyed helping others along their searches for answers to their family history questions.

Lottie could be the person who died in 1953.  I love the tool that has been suggested to me for finding records.

Lottie was the youngest sister to my great grandmother, who unlike her sister was born in Hayle and stayed in the US after her father's death, having married the son of the gold mine's superintendent.  Lottie's mother had parents and brothers still alive who were willing to help support her and her young children after Lottie's father died young in the Gold Rush town of Johnsville.

I had hoped that posting on Rootschat would catch the eye of a descendant of the family still living in England.

Thanks again.

Barry

You may yet catch that eye -- although it may take time. ;) Just make sure you keep the email address in your account here current and then you won't miss replies down the line! The subject line of your post will show up on internet searches, so anyone who googles "Lottie Delbridge" will find you, for instance.

Also do check online trees for names of Lottie and her family. If you don't subscribe to Ancestry, you can still access all trees from that site at www.mundia.com, where you can register, search and send messages free of charge.

(edit - and aha, I find your tree with Lottie in it there, so of course anyone else who searches trees for her family members will find you too.)

I'd figured that was the idea, that you were one of the US branch. Being in the Canadian branch of several far-flung English families, descended from early 20th century emigrants, I know the feeling of being the lost tribe. Even when I do identify cousins at sites on line (e.g. descendants of my great-grandparents' siblings), the first response to my greetings is usually "I don't thiiiink so." Out of sight, out of mind!

Thanks for another wonderful link.  I can't wait to try it but thought I would write first.  While I can't find much on Lottie so far (tho I haven't clicked on the link you mention), I have found her next older sister, Prudence Caroline "Carrie" Delbridge Rodda.  She and her husband had one child that I have found with the help of RootsChat:  that child seems to have died a 'spinster.'  Don't you love that term?  But I have found the name of the Hotel they owned in Camborne, The Regal, now incarnated as a pub with B and B, The Lounge Inn.  Through all these connections, I have finally deciphered a letter I've had in my possession since the late 1980's.  Carrie wrote to her nephew, my grandfather, from The Regal Hotel to his home in California.  I always wondered why this person wrote from a hotel:  turns out she owned it!  My grandfather's mother was Carrie's oldest sister, Mary Frances.  Carrie was writing with condolences to my grandfather due to his father's passing, Carrie's brother-in-law.  This fellow had help financially support Carrie, her siblings and her mother after they moved back to England.  In the letter, Carrie acknowledges the support and remarks on how much my great grandfather worshipped Carrie's sister, his wife, and how he was never quite the same after she died.  Very touching and a wonderful personal insight into these people.  Next trip to England, we'll visit the Regal Hotel and visit Carrie's mother's grave:  who knows, maybe by that time I'll know where Carrie was buried.  Thanks again for all your help!  Barry

I've just checked out the Mundia.com link:  it looks like it is an Ancestry.com product.  My own tree from my days at Ancestry is on there.  The real Lottie Delbridge (Roberts) is on my tree there but with not much other information.  I did find a tree with her sister's husband's family but his part ends with only his name and date of birth.  You never know, though, just what will turn up!
