I am trying to establish details of a Thomas Barwise who was born in Harrington Cumberland in 1768. He was in America from at least 1825 to 1841 at the time  of his death I want to know his occupation and details of who he was living with

Hi Pabloabadul,

Unfortunately the 1830 and 1840 US Census would not contain the information you require.
Enumerators of the 1830 census were asked to include the following categories in the census: Name of head of household -  after that each age group is recorded numerically by age - number of free white males and females in age categories -  0 to 5 years, 5 to 10 years, 10 to 15 years, 15 to 20 years, 20 to 30 years, 30 to 40 years, 40 to 50 years, 50 to 60 years, 60 to 70 years, 70 to 80 years, 80 to 90 years, 90 to 100 years, over 100 year -  the name of a slave owner and the number of slaves owned by that person - the number of male and female slaves and free "coloured" persons by age categories - the number of foreigners (not naturalized) in a household - the number of deaf, dumb, and blind persons within a household - and town or district, and county of residence.
And 1840 - Enumerators of the 1840 census were asked to include the following categories in the census - name of head of household, number of free white males and females, number of other free persons, names of slave owners and number of slaves, number of foreigners, and town or district and county of residence.

Nothing that I am aware of at that time. Noticed from other sources Thomas was "ship's master"
and the male members of the Barwise clan were Merchant Seamen.
Perhaps he just went back and forth - Harrington would have been close to the Ports of both Whitehaven and Workington.
What evidence do you have that he lived in Maine ?

Ok, Found a reference to it.  Will post just in case it helps in any searching. This Thomas seems to have been born around 1771.

Carlisle Journal, Sat 11 June 1842

At Lake Rowegan, State of Maine, USA on 8 Sept last in the 70th year of his age, Mr Thomas Barwise after residence of 24 years. The deceased was a native of Whitehaven and brother to the Late Captain Barwise of Whitehaven.

The 1840 census shows: Skowhegan, aged 60-70, 3 sons 15-20, 1 10-15 1 under 5, 1 daughter 10-15 2 5-10, 1 under 5. So he would have been born about 1772. He also seemed to have a brother John who had a daughter Caroline Barwise who married in Penobscot Maine.

And the Carlisle journal shows that he was related to the "Late Captain Barwise", who I believe is my ancestor Benjamin Barwise. So this must indeed be the Thomas Barwise baptised in Harrington in 1768. He originally married Elizabeth Saul in Bromfield in 1793.

I also believe this Thomas Barwise turns up in New York and has 6 children with Mary Elsworth 1800-1815. Then he disappears and turns up in Maine and has around 9 children with Mary Roberts 1824-1842.

The death certificate of his daughter Philena Barwise (Turner) in 1917 records her father as being a ship captain.

I'm working on "The Cumberland Paquet" which was published in Whitehaven and in the day books I have the following
Capt Barwise of Whitehaven 1800-1804
Mr Barwise of Liverpool 1800
Mr Barwise of Dublin 1802
Mr Barwise a Welsh Carrier 1800 ?
Mrs Barwise of Whitehaven 1804
I do not know if the Mrs & Capt are the one and same
do you have access to Trade Directories?
