Military Medals - Leonard Makin
« on: Sunday 06 October 13 21:01 BST (UK) »
Good Evening,
I have come across a military record for a relative of mine, Leonard Makin b1881,  who seems to have quite a few medals.
I can't quite read them all and I wondered if any one here could read the names and perhaps tell me a little about the medals please?
Any help would be much appreciated!
Thank you  :)

The clearest is the 1914 Star, for service in action in the very first months of ww1.  Although they are not shown on the form, he will almost certainly have earned the British War and Victory Medals.  With the '14 Star they are known as a trio, or Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.  Google will tell you more.

He also served in the Anglo Boer war and earned the Queen's South Africa Medal, with clasps for various actions during that campaign, and the King's SA Medal, with clasps.

Best of all is the Distinguished Conduct Medal, details of which should be reported in the London Gazette, available online but with a hard search system.

Thank you so much!  :)
I just searched the London Gazette and found a snippet about why he received his medal. Very interesting indeed.
Thank you again for your help, I really appreciate it  :)

With reference to his DCM, it may be worth approaching the museum of his regiment (or its successor unit), which mayjust have more information.

hi both
dcm citation , for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty , he rendered most valuable services with trench tramway detachment in taking up ammunition and supplies .

the other piece of the record reads , mentioned in secretary of state for war list .for valuable services in connection with operation in north Russia 25 / 3 /19 -- 26 / 9 /19 .
the above being a skirmish by a small force of the british army during the summer of 1919 going under the title of the sadleir-jackson brigade and the altham flotilla [ royal navy ] on the north dvina . if you do a google search you can read up on the affair also a couple of books have been published about it as well .
as an aside one of my gt uncles won his military medal there as well .

That's not a bad idea Graham! Thank you, I'll look into contacting the regiment's museum. It would be great if they had more details on why he got his medal  :)

Wow Trevor, thank you so much for the information! I've just googled sadleir-jackson brigade and have found an online book about them which I am just about to read  ;D
I wonder if your gt uncle and my grandad's great uncle knew each other?  :)
