In search of Rawlings Family
« on: Wednesday 02 October 13 18:27 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I wonder if anyone can help me please.

I am searching for the Rawlings family.  John Rawlings Born: 1859 (unsure where) married Matilda Underhill Born:1864 in Gloucestershire.  From what I can gather they married in 1889 in Tetbury Glos.  We believe they had one son called Robert William, however I cannot find any Robert William Rawlings on the births records.  However after some help, I got a Robert william Davis Born in 18 Feb 1900 ( that is correct) Portsmouth on the 1901 census living with a Matilda Davis his mother.  Then on the 1911 census he is listed as living again with his mother but there names are back to Rawlings???????  It looks like Matilda married a James Davis in sep 1901.

Its gets more confusing as I have found a John Rawlings on the 1891 census as being a inmate at Gloucester Lunatic Asylum listed as single.  However I have also found another John Rawlings B; abt 1859 born in Portugal listed as an inmate again in Glos lunatic asylum?????

We believe that John was in the Royal Navy.  can anyone suggest how I can unravel this mystery.

Hi,
I think we should start with the basics.
John RAWLINGS married Matilda UNDERHILL at St Mary the Virgin, 1889 Tetbury 6a 659 Jun Qtr.
William UNDERHILL married Elizabeth LAMBERT at St Mary the Virgin, 1849 Tetbury 11 509 Mar Qtr.
Child of William & Elizabeth UNDERHILL:-
Matilda UNDERHILL b.1864 Tetbury 6a 313 Dec Qtr.
I can't find a birth for John RAWLINGS in Gloucestershire and suspect that he was born out-of-county.
I will check the 1851 Census for Tetbury, which hopefully will note his place of birth.
I will also check the marriage entry for William UNDERHILL & Elizabeth LAMBERT and John RAWLINGS & Matilda UNDERHILL at Glos Archives, taking a transcription, and get back to you.
I'll leave it like that for now, so as not to confuse the situation.
Kindly confirm that I am on the right track for you.
Victor

Hi,
I've found some more historical data that is most probably your family tree.
William UNDERHILL, son of William & Maria, a Labourer of Tetbury, baptised at St Mary the Virgin, Tetbury, 29th July 1827.
William UNDERHILL married Maria NIXON at St Mary the Virgin, Tetbury, 18th June 1815.
Elizabeth LAMBERT, dau of George & Maria, a Carrier of Cirencester, baptised at St Mary the Virgin, Tetbury, 27th December 1825.
George LAMBERT married Maria BARNFIELD at St Mary the Virgin, Tetbury, 19th October 1818.

Hi

Thanks for your reply.  I can confirm some of your information.

Yes the marriage for both are correct as well as Matilda's birth.  I think John may have been born in Portugal, but cannot confirm this at the moment.  You do not need to go to all the trouble of going to the archives but thank you anyway.
