tried ancestry for army records but nothing matches (don't know how records differ from those on  FindMyPast)

no I surrender (lol) I can't find him in 1871 or 1891

if he was in an institution and only with an initial and goodness knows what surname, I don't think I'll find him if he was on the run either, especially if he didn't want to be found lol

He & his brother were probably farmed out while Bella visited the Dodwells in 1871.
If you can coax his army records out of Cathy that should just about do it.

Was nt 100% sure it was your Reuben, mothers name etc, butquite an uncommon name.
If it was then he was abroad in 1891.

Reuben does sound a most colourful character that I have ever stumbled across 

I tried researching the Reuban H J Dodwell this morning and his family in case that brought anything to light but sadly they all proved just as tricky to track down after the 1871 census, so I abandoned the idea - a daughter Ann Selina Dodwell appeared to change her name to Annie Beatrice (and her age) and looks like she  "ran off" with a William Kemp - got my self in knots and the father appears to have disappeared too!

I came across this post whilst researching the name Abilla Plimmer (as it is so unusual) as they were listed as a 'visitor' living with my relatives when researching my family tree.

Annie Beatrice isnt Ann Selina .... Annie Beatrice was my Great grandmother.  She is the daughter of Emmaline Ward (Nee Dodwell) who was sister to Ann Selina, daughter of Reuben and Louisa.
