I wonder if anyone can help me with information regarding distant relatives who went to Canada in 1922?  The couple in question were Robert Yule McDougall (born 1887 Peterhead, Scotland; died 1974 Canada) and his wife Mary Hay (Buchan) McDougall (born 1895 Peterhead, Scotland; died @1931 Toronto, Canada).
They were married in Scotland before Robert emigrated to Toronto, Canada in July 1922.  Mary followed later but I'm not sure when. They had 4 children: M(b1920),K(b1923), S(b1925) and J(b1928). I was interested to know if some of the above or their children are still living in Toronto and perhaps to communicate about family history.

Thanks
Joyce

My relationship to Robert and Mary is that their Mothers, Jemima and Jane Hutchison(sisters) were first cousins of my great granny Mary Calder.  We share the same g.g.grandparents John Hutchison and Jane (ms Cameron)Hutchison who lived in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Hi Joyce,

Welcome to Rootschat!!

I have found the Form 30A immigration records for Mary and her eldest daughter.  They came to Canada on the Metagama in Oct 1922.

Mary

Canada has fairly strict privacy laws, so there aren't many records available for the time period you seek.  We have to rely on City Directories, Newspaper accounts, Cemetery records etc.  As for City Directories, the Toronto Public Library has the full collection.  You can contact them for lookups.

The Toronto Star newspaper archive is searchable online.  It is a paid site, but not very expensive.
http://pagesofthepast.ca/

I did a quick search for Robert's obit in 1974 but didn't see one.  Do you know the exact date that Robert died?  An obit could give married names for the daughters.

I found the marriage of daughter K.  She was married in November 1945 (29 Nov. edition, page 24) to a Mr S Sheldon.  K's middle initial is J.  It says she is the daughter of Cpl Robert Y McDougall and Mrs McDougall.  Mrs is not referred to as "late", so are you sure Mary died in 1931??  The Bride's sister Miss S (name corresponds to what you have) McDougall was one of the attendants.  There is a Miss B McDougall who was the flower girl.

As far as tracing living people, you can search the online phonebook at
http://www.canada411.ca/

Rootschat tries to protect privacy too - so they request that when you are referring to people who are still living, you use their initials instead of full names.  Would you please modify your initial post to replace the full names of the children with initials -- unless you know that they are no longer living.  Thanks :)

RK

Added -- there is a photo of K McDougall and her husband S Sheldon in the Nov 30, 1945 edition of the Star, page 22.

Hi,

Looks like K McDougall Sheldon, husband S Sheldon and daughter S Sheldon went to California to live in 1950.

Their daughter's card is the one before her father's.  You can page back and find it from his.  It gives her date of birth in Toronto.

Hi again

I was searching the Sheldon daughter's name and I found a memorial record for someone with that same name (including middle initial) and the same date of birth as on the US immigration form.  The memorial was printed in the Ottawa Citizen paper, so I don't know if it belongs to your relative or not.

I am trying to find the original obit (not just this memorial notice), but no luck so far.  :(

Thanks again RK for all this great info.  I'm almost certain that you have discovered the correct Sally Sheldon granddaughter of Robert and Mary McDougall.  Perhaps the Sheldon family returned to Canada from California when Mr Sheldon passed away as there is no mention of papa in the memorial, just mama.  What a lovely girl with a beautiful smile.  So sad to die so young and predecease a parent.
Also correct death of Mary Hay McDougall in 1932.  Perhaps Robert remarried, hence the Mrs McDougall mentioned in the marriage notice?
I'm still hopeful of tracing the son J McDougall b.1928 - it is possible he is still alive 84/85yrs?

On a different note - do you have any ancestors from Scotland / U.K whom I may be able to try and help you trace?
Best Regards
Joyce

Also travelling Jessie I McDougall born 5 th August 1915 and aged 45 years, housewife. Both going to 2 Fonthill Gardens, Aberdeen N. Intended stay 5/6 weeks.

Thanks Sandra, this is definitely my Robert McDougall and presumably accompanied by his (much younger) 2nd wife.  How fascinating for me to know that they spent time back in the North East of Scotland not far from where I live!  :)

Cheers
