MILLS Joseph & Martha (nee WILTSHIRE)
« on: Monday 30 September 13 03:32 BST (UK) »
Joseph MILLS b 1835 in Wottmungrege, Gloucestershire and Martha WILTSHIRE b 1837 in Kingswood, Gloucestershire. I don't have any details of their parents.

I am looking for emigration records for them. They married in Gloucestershire, England in 1857 and emigrated to NZ not long after. Their first child was born in NZ in 1860. In 1884 they were living in Blenheim and Joseph was a milkman.

Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers

Hi Bails,
Joseph MILLS married Martha WILSHIRE at St Mary the Virgin, Kingswood, 1857 Dursley 6a 341 Jun Qtr.
Martha, dau of Edwin & Sarah WILSHIRE, a Tin-Man, (a Tinsmith or Tinker), of Kingswood, baptised at St Mary the Virgin, Kingswood, 13th August 1837.
Her elder sister, Mary WILSHIRE, was also baptised at St Mary the Virgin, Kingswood, on 29th June 1834, and Edwin was a Labourer.
There is NO sign of a baptism for Edwin, and his place of birth - Wottmungrege - is NOT possible in Gloucestershire. I will check the marriage entry at Glos Archives which should at least reveal who his father was, and then may be able to locate both of his parents.

Hi Bails,
After a hard look at the placename "Wottmungrege", it suddenly occurred to me that this was a garbled version of Wotton-under-Edge, and "voila" I found the baptism of Joseph MILLS immediately.
Source: Gloucestershire Family History Society (GFHS) Gloucestershire Baptism Index 1813-1837:-
Joseph, son of George & Rebecca MILLS, a Bailiff of Alderbury, baptised at St Kenelm, Alderbury, 25th December 1837.
Source: GFHS Gloucestershire Marriage Index 1800-1837:-
A George MILLS married Rebecca MORSE, Widow, at Holy Trinity, Long Newton (near Tetbury, Glos), 26th May 1832, by Licence.
This is the ONLY John MILLS/Rebecca marriage that fits.
If you would still like a transcription of the above marriages do let me know, and I'll transcribe them on my next visit to Glos Archives.

Thanks for taking the time to have a look into my MILLS family for me  :)

However, as they emigrated to NZ I also posted on that board and got some useful census information which seems to tie in with my MILLS:

I'm wondering if Wottmungrege is actually Wotton under edge. If so, this may be your MILLs family in 1851

1851
Civil Parish: Kingswood
County: Gloucestershire
Reg District: Dursley
Sub-reg district: Wotton

MILLS Hannah, Head, Mar., 42, Weaver (woollen cloth), b. Gloucestershire, Anseley
MILLS, Anne, Daur, U, 19, Winder of woollen yarn, b. Gloucestershire, Minchinhampton (?)
MILLS Joseph, Son, U, 16, Cloth cutter (woollen), b, Gloucestershire, Wotton under edge
MILLS Charlotte, Daur, U, 11,[occupation blank], b. Gloucestershire, Kingswood

This might be the same family in 1841:

1841
Civil Parish: Kingswood
County: Wiltshire
Reg District: Dursley
Sub-reg district: Wotton Under Edge

MILLS William, 30 Weaver, N
MILLS Hannah, 30, N
MILLS, John, 11, N
MILLS, Anne, 10, N
MILLS Joseph, 6, N
MILLS Charlotte,1, Y

So, the baptism you found for Joseph MILLS (the son of George & Rebecca) might not be my MILLS?

I am somewhat confused now  ???

I really appreciate your time and wonder if you could look into the possibility of William & Hannah MILLS being Joseph's parents.

TIA

Hi,
I have double-checked the Baptism Index, and the ONLY baptism I can find, that might fit, is as follows, but there is NO sign of a baptism for Joseph.
Anna Maria, dau of William & Hannah MILLS, a Weaver of Wotton, bap 27th February 1834, at St Mary, Wotton-under-Edge.
