Excellent reply JM as per usual extremely thorough and informative ;D But........ ::) I would never presume to want to correct you, NO...not me....never, it's just that....umm, how shall I put this ???

The ergh people of umm Scotland refer to themselves as SCOTTISH or Scotsman or just Scot. Ergh, argh, never umm SCOTCH :-[.....That's sort of like a Single malt variety nice colour, beautiful flavour and really enjoyed by a majority of SCOTTISH people's. ::) Having been distilled there for some years now.

Now the Scottish people's may be WHISKEY drinkers and who am I to stop them, but we as Australians enjoy a nice COLD BEER on a hot summer day. We are known for our ability to whack down a few too.  :-[ That's probably just the heat :P But I don't think we would want to be called BEER"S when Australian's or AUSSIES or even just People from down under suits us fine ;D

If you get my drift :-X

Neil ;D ;D ;D ;D

Good point Neil, but as I was transcribing from an official record, I typed the words up as I read them.  SCOTCH is the heading on the printed form  ;D and so Scotch is "wot I rote" and most likely the form was not designed by a Scotsman at all  :)   The list is copyright to the UK National Archives

ADD

Neil,  I have just tried TROVE and keyed in "Scotch Emigrants"

Lots of returns including this one  ;D http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/38345760  and this one http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/124564209

Cheers,  JM
