Dan, the info on Victoria’s BDM is as good or better than Scotland’s. You can download Victoria BDMs immediately via your plastic card, and you can save some of the pennies if you already have the reference no. (I typed up TWO possibles earlier in this post).

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?board=399.0 This is the link to RChat’s Resources Board for Australia. When you click on that link you will be taken to a series of child boards. These include child boards for each of the States and Territories that are part of the Australian Federation.
Here’s a link that may also be very helpful as it was prepared by one of our Moderators for the Australian Board. It is ***HOW TO REQUEST A LOOKUP***
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=368728.0I have not looked very far at all for your elusive STEWART family. The surname is very popular, as is STEWARD, STUART and other spelling variations that can be found in Australian indexes due to the accents of either the person providing the verbal information or the person recording the verbal information.
There is NO national BDM institution. Each State and territory has their own records, similarly they each have their own Parliaments which sit in the respective capital cities. All the state Parliaments have written constitutions, initially provided as 19th Century Acts of the English Parliament and so each State's Parliament (and their institutions including their BDM registries) pre-date the Federal parliament in Canberra.
