Hi ,

If it's a birth in Scotland then the Scotlandspeople website is the place to go -
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

The father will not appear on the birth certificate unless he was present.

"Looking for Hugh Clifford born 1889 he is my grandfather and a brickwall! On his marriage certificate and war certificates he said he was born glasgow Scotland but I have checked and all the lookups do not help with only one Hugh Clifford of similar age but turns out it is not him. His fathers name was John and he was a printer and his mothers name was Barbara English and she was meant to have been living in America so I wondered if Hugh was on any American census with his parents Thank you Anne"
