Hello....
This looks like him.....
Baptism - BASFORD St Leodegarius - 28th May 1877
John RAFFERTY - parents = Michael & Elizabeth RAFFERTY
Abode = West Gate
Fathers occupation = Miner
It is the only child I can see born with those parents.

I can't see him either, only in 1881 & 1911 just as you said.
Thomas Rafferty who is with them in 1881 was Irish,so, if John's father, Michael Rafferty was from Ireland, I wonder if that is where they are?

I think this might be his birth registration.

Thank you very much for the information in your posts.
I had tried variants of "Rafferty" but missed the "Raffarty" option.
Re St Leodegarius records; are these on line ? I would like to explore other parts of the family in the area, although I suspect they may have moved to Stokesley, Yorkshire
With best wishes

Hello...
The information I gave you was from the Nottinghamshire FHS index on CD =
http://www.nottsfhs.org.uk/
Heywood beat me to it.... but was just going to mention the 1882 marriage - William Attenborough & Elizabeth Raffaty married at Basford Register Office.
I think this is John's father Michael Rafferty, he is in Academy Place, Basford, in the household of Benjamin Perkins...
1871
- RG10 piece 3485 folio 51 page 40 - Academy Place, Basford, Nottinghamshire.
Mick Raffady,Lodger, aged 19yrs, Miner - born Ireland.
The online records on Familysearch for Basford cover the years BAPTISMS 1630-1835 MARRIAGES 1630-1835 BURIALS limited
http://dustydocs.com/link/29/33092/111371/baptisms-1630-1835-marriages-1630-1835-burials-limited.html
~~
Freereg for Basford coverage = BAPTISMS 1662-1900 MARRIAGES 1568-1812 + FreeREG
http://www.freereg.org.uk/
~~
Then there is the "Broxtowe Hundred" site - you might find something useful.
Unfortunately the marriages state they go up until 1900, but actually only go up until 1859.
