Auland (Anland) COX, Born c1840 Derbyshire.
« on: Monday 23 September 13 14:44 BST (UK) »
Hello,

There are only two records that I have managed to unearth for Auland (Anland) COX, born c1840 presumably in Derbyshire..........the Parkhurst Prison Register, the National Archives HO24/15, p.138 and the England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892 courtesy of Ancestry.   His crime was burglary, sentenced at Derby Assizes on 14/03/1854 to 6 years penal servitude.  He was received first at Millbank Prison London, transferred to Parkhurst Prison on 30/09/1854 and lastly removed to Portland Prison on 24/11/1857.

The christian name is correct, albeit with the possible alternative spellings, but despite researching all available on-line indexes that I can think of no further information has been retrieved.

Can anyone help please??

For the moment,

Tony Cocks

Where did the year of birth come from?
Was he therefore only 14 when the crime was committed? No age on Criminal record on Ancestry.

That's a really unusual name isn't it.  Can't find anything but could it be Auland was his mothers maiden name or something  :-\

The age came from the Parkhurst Prison Register ( a copy of which I purchased many years ago).............there is no other information from the prison record that could be helpful other than he was a Weaver and could read only

Glossop Derbyshire

I can't find anything else close, such an unusual name.

This is all beginning to make sense.........Ashton-under-Lyne and Glossop are geographically neighbours, so the 1841 and 1851 Census details are very much in sequence.  Now the challenge is from 1861 onwards!!   And, of course, there is some adage about the "answer staring you in the face" and I had not conceived that my own surname "Cocks" may have a part to play!!!   There's no fool etc.

Anyway, thank you for opening up the possible research options for me to follow.

For now,

Tony
