Hi Tony,

it's looking promising. It looks like he is still there on the 1851 Whitfield census born in Ashton as Enland Cocks age 12 occ. weaver to me. There's a few with Enland as a surname in Lancs. on Familysearch, only a very few though. Maybe that's where it came from, it's intriguing.

Cheers Jo

Hello Jo and Trish,

I think I have exhausted all the variations of Auland COX, through Anland, Enland and Newland to COX, COCK and COCKS via Ancestry and FamilySearch, the only two indexes available to me.......at least I'm exhausted!!   Google, Bing, Yahoo and AOL have also been offered the opportunity to help but, sadly, let me down.

So whither next?............hopefully not the pending tray.

For now,

Tony

Getting the birth cert to see exactly what his name was?

Following the rest of the family after 1851 to see where they went, what they did, and whether Anland(Yanland/Newland) was involved - eg a witness on a marriage, mentioned in a Will etc.?

There's a marriage in Hayfield which might be worth checking out in Dec 1888.

Groom Hugh Land Cox *

2 brides to choose from Elizabeth Proctor and Sarah Elizabeth Ashton.

With luck the 1891 census should help rule him out or not.  I realise if he was yours he would be 50 when he married but worth a look.

* Ah there's a death in Glossop Sep 1926 for Hughland Cox age 62 so that could be the one that married in 1888 rather than yours.

Nope definitely not yours.  This one married Sarah Elizabeth and was born Glossop 1865.

Thanks Milliepede,

Certainly your ideas opened some new avenues for me explore with variations on "Auland"........."Euland", from research derivations of "Hughland", was hopefully going to be a eureka moment but there was my old friend, the brickwall.

Never mind.   The pending tray is becoming more and more inviting.

No no don't put it in the pending tray it will only gather dust.

I was looking for names *land but back to Hughland 1865 he appears to be the son of Edward and Ann Brough married 1861.  They are lodging with mother in law Brough in 1871.

Unfortunately it is written Edward not Euland but he is born Ashton Lancs abt 1836 and dies age 36 in 1872.

And per family search marriage 1861 Ashton his father was Samuel Cox.

1881 very much confirms Millipedes findingfs.

Ann is a widow ( fitting with death of husband in 1872)
Eldest child (who was John W Cox age 12 in 1881) is now William Bruff, as he was born before the marriage ( which was found in 1861)
Child written as Rowland in 1871 is now Hughland (bn 1865ish)
