WW2 Medals why weren't they engraved in 1948 -1949 when issued like ww1?

Hi All,

I hope someone can answer this question, WW2 Medals why weren't they engraved when issued in 1948 -1949,   like they weren't at the end of ww1. was it just down to cost.

Are there any ww2 medals that are engraved with the service men name?

any help would be great.

I would guess that the marking of WW1 medals caused so much trouble with errors that the authorities decided not to bother after WW2. I was quite disappointed too when I found this out last year.

for what it,s worth ww1 medals were sent out automatically  where as ww2 medals had to be applied for by the individual person if they had already been demobbed .

Hi Paul,

I think you had it right to begin with, it really boiled down to administration and the cost of naming all the medals. Many WW2 veterans were incredibly disappointed when their medal entitlement dropped through the letterbox in a small cardboard box and unnamed.

Boots the chemist offered a naming service. I don't know how much this cost though.

My uncle's medals WW2 medals were all engraved on the back. I assume this was done privately.
Incidentally modern Iraq and Afghanistan medals are engraved
