Dicksons of Aberdeen, Scotland
« on: Thursday 19 September 13 02:56 BST (UK) »
Hi All, I'm looking for the father of my ancestor George Dickson born 1760 and who was married to Anne Agnes Manners. I believe Georges father was a James born 1736, but not sure and have no wife for this James. I believe the perish would have been Roxbugh in Scotland. Any help would be appreciated!-Richard Dickson

Hi Richard,

You've posted on the Aberdeenshire board; do you know if any of your Dicksons came from there?

I've found the following which may relate to your family:

George Dickson mar. Anne Manners (dau. of John Manners), Edinburgh parish, 8th June 1779

William, b. 2nd February 1789 (bapt. 16th February) St. Cuthberts, Edinburgh - son of the above couple

Perhaps if you could post some more information about George's son (your ancestor), we can definitely confirm whether these are the same or related families. :)

Hi Hume,  Many thanks for getting back to me. I have James Dickson b. 1736 Melrose, Roxburghshire perish, but no father or wife. He was the father of George Dickson b 1760 who married Anne Manners at the Tobooth-kirk perish. My ancestor was their son JOHN b. 1788-1888.
I have no information on James b 1736, No information on who his wife was and no death for George. Most all of my ancestors have been near the Edinburgh Midlothian area.
If you can help in any way it would sure be appreciated! Thanks, Dick Dickson

Hi Dick,

Your thread may get moved to the Midlothian board if there's no Aberdeen connections here.

Firstly, what confirmation do you have that your John is a son of George and Ann[e]/Agnes?

Second, there are quite a few George Dicksons born around the area who could have married in 1779. The marriage entry of George & Anne shows him only as the Tolbooth Kirk parish.

I would be a bit hesitant putting James and George together as family without some further evidence.

Hi Again Hume,  Because of the lack of any death time or certificate for George Dickson b 1760 I cannot determine with accuracy who his parents were (James b 1736?). My data is basically from other parties using Ancestry.com, using as many of the other family data as possible. Still, I realize it cannot take the place of hard data from death certificates.
Your right about the James and George connection and I don't have a lot of confidence at all that James is his father, but I have found on other lead and that's why my original question.
Yes, perhaps I should move over to the Mithlothian, Edinburgh site if I can locate it. Thanks again for all the help!-Dick
