How did I not find this sooner!
« on: Wednesday 18 September 13 19:58 BST (UK) »
Ive seen many answers to queries referring to IGI.  Ive never really looked at what that was and wondered what it meant.

Today I saw in the WDYTYA mag a reference to Familysearch.  I thought it looked interesting and Id give it a go sometime.

This evening I saw IGI mentioned again on here and Googled it.  I entered an ancestor's name and lo and behold up popped his baptism along with confirmation of his parents (which I was desperately needing).

I feel like Ive had my epiphany moment!!

 ;D ;D ;D

Methinks you might be spending a lot of time on that site! It's great, even if it just points you in the right direction.

2 and a half hours later and Im still going.  Its helped me find out my 4xgt grandfather remarried when his first wife died.  He was 68, she was about 19.  He was 73 when he fathered his third child with new wife.

Be very wary of what you find on there :(

It is an excellent bonus for research, but much of it is submitted by members of the LDS and will need further research to confirm the accuracy. 'Extracted' records are much more reliable but still need to be confirmed before they can be accepted.

Yes! I agree with Colin and you will find many warnings here on Rootschat about "submitted" records.

When you look at the search page you will see two headings Community Contributed IGI  Community Indexed IGI.  Both boxes are ticked, the Community Contributed records are 'submitted' as Colin says by members of the LDS and some records can be purely guesswork, try to cross check with the Indexed records which are transcriptions from the original registers.
You can filter out submitted records by un-checking that box.

Always try to find a second source, other websites do have either transcriptions done by local family history groups or in some cases scanned images of the original registers.  Might cost you for a pay to view or a subscription but worth it in the long run.  I know which one I would rather trust.
And don't forget Rootschat, many folk have access to all kinds of records, you only have to ask  :D

Having said that the IGI is a very good starting point.

But it's also just enabled me to go back another generation and find a missing child - as long as the birth certificate I've just ordered confirms it.  But I agree, I needed Find my Past (in this case) to confirm what I found on IGI and fill in the blanks.
I've a week to wait for the certificate and if it's ok - I've knocked down a rather longstanding brick wall.  Brilliant!  And it was your post Vicky that inspired me to have another look.
Thank you very much.
