marriage index?
« on: Wednesday 18 September 13 12:59 BST (UK) »
hi i'm struggling to find a marriage index for an alfred jacob hollis to someone with the maiden name wells.  I've had good old look around online and i'm not finding their index. I know they had a child jean hollis in nov 1911, and there are two possible other births with wells mmn, in the same district of S. Stoneham.  The alfred jacob hollis comes from jean's marriage cert as the father.  I'm expecting them to be in the portsmouth area. I will order jean's birth cert when i've got some spare cash but the marriage index would help for now.

i also had a look for a birth or marriage notice in the papers but again came up blank  :(
appreciate any help thanks

Could the middle name be wrong?

There's an Alfred Arthur Hollis marriage Alverstoke in Dec 1909 and one of the two brides is a Mary Emily Wells.

Has to be worth checking out on census  :)

It's not a marriage but there is a death of an Alfred J Hollis in Portsmouth

Alfred J Hollis
Birth Date:   abt 1883
Age at death 70
Date of Registration:   Sep 1953
Portsmouth   Hampshire
Volume:   6b Page:   325

Added: Sorry, I think that might be Alfred John Hollis who was married to an Eva Irene Nobes

Wells  as the  mmn      on the  possible births  may  not be the name  she got  married  with  ,   ie that  the mother was married before,

Confusing isn't it.  There is a Mary Emily Wells born Alverstoke 1891 so she would have been a young bride.

Family tree with her on has Hollis (Wells) but has her marrying in 1931 so  :-\

There's an Alfred A Hollis death in Southampton 1928 age 43 could that be him.

There's an Alfred Arthur born 1883 IOW and a census 1891 IOW with an Alfred 7 son of Jacob so maybe that's where the Jacob comes in.  Also a brother Jacob among the 9 children.

1901 this Alfred 17 is with family and is a something moulder (apprentice)

thanks nanny jan, i was sitting looking at the freebmd results for my wells children, which didn't have that, but as soon as i narrowed the years in the search it showed up.  Firstly he has to be his son, and secondly he dies in exeter which is where my aunts, also wells are from.  If i could find the young fella's 1911c that should be all of them hopefully.

interesting that the alfred henry hollis, bn southhampton married mabel alice bellinger portsea 1898, said he was a brass moulder on the census.  on jean's marriage cert ajhollis occupation was moulder.

i still haven't found mary emily wells marriage.

thanks for your help

Mary Emily  Hillier  (Hollis/Wells) dies in 1971 birthdate given as 25 July 1891   and   she married Thomas Hillier in  Southampton
