Lookup at Proni, Jane Stevenson
« on: Tuesday 17 September 13 06:18 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have found a Jane Stevenson born 1867, m Hugh Gray in 1883 and died 1940. Found children etc in 1901 and 1911 census.  My problem is that I need to verify that this Jane Stevenson is the one I want.  She was born to Nancy Stevenson in Ballycregeagh, no father mentioned.
Jane & Hugh Gray lived in Cullybackey and died and were buried there.
But, other than paying an outlandish price for DC can someone look this death up for me or is there another way of getting to see the death certificate of Jane.  All I want to know is who her mother was on her death certificate.
Would really appreciate this assistance.  Annie

Irish Death Certificates dont show parents names, only informant usually next of kin.

... and it's GRONI that keep vital records.

What details are listed on Jane's marriage certificate? father's name and occupation (if any)? residence? names of both witnesses?

A free search shows a marriage: Jane L. Stevenson, 1883 Co.Antrim (husband Hugh Gray)- father Robert

The marriage I got from another website, didn't givefather's name.  Interesting that that one says Robert. Her eldest brother was named Robert.  Don't know re middle name either.
Will have a look on the website you suggest.
I thought that by 1940 Ireland would have by then put both parent's on death cert. How silly of me to think that. So it wouldn't be worth spending the money anyway.
Thank you for your answers but it doesn't look good. Annie

Should have mentioned the reason I believed this to be the right Jane was that she had a child called Agnes (Mother's name) and Robert S, both died aged 2 & 4, later she had another Agnes and Robert S, who lived to good age and also listed at Cullybackey graveyard.
Maybe they just put the name Robert as her father. The three sons in Scotland on their marriages and deaths had no father listed.
This Nancy (Agnes) Stevenson had 5 iligitimate children.
Another daughter born 1865 stayed in Ireland, was looking at one who married James Mann, again in 1901 &1911 census, but same problem. Annie

It's not uncommon for illegitimate children to either use the name of a relatives, stepfather or mother's partner for the marriage certificate or indeed to simply make up a name.

Only if (1) there is a headstone and (2) there are details inscribed on it.

Hi Annie

The grave is in Cullybackey Reformed Presbyterian Cemetery and reads

Erected in loving memory of Hugh Gray, Moyasset, who died 21st March 1924, aged 59 years. Also his daughter, Agnes A. Gray, who died 5th October 1893, aged 4 1/2 years Also his son Robert S. Gray, who died 7th January 1894, aged 2 1/2 years. Also his wife Jane Linton Stevenson, who died 4th August 1940 in her 78th year. And their daughter Mary who died 15th January 1961, aged 73 years. And their son Robert S. who died 28th August 1977, aged 77 years Also their daughter Agnes who died 21st April 1983 aged 85 years.

NOTE: Jane Linton Stevenson, Linton could have been her maiden name or her mothers, or indeed before I am corrected anyone for that matter.  In general I have found that the middle name is usually the mothers maiden name.  I just thought you would like to know if you have not already got this information.  As already mentioned I will take a photograph for you, will be there tomorrow.
