Best genealogy website for Irish family tree?
« on: Monday 16 September 13 11:04 BST (UK) »
I have an Ancestry membership and most of my family research is focussed in England, for both myself and my husband however my mum is Irish and I'm finding that Ancestry is not particularly helpful for this side of the family.

Is there are a better website to use for Irish research?

Hello,

it depends on how much information you already have and the area.

Ancestry has Irish civil records - births, marriages and deaths. It also has some church records.
Family Search also has the civil indexes and some parish records.

Rootschat has Irish resources here: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?board=385.0

Rootschat also has county records with some resources in each of those.

http://www.rootsireland.ie/  has county records but is a pay site and the records are mainly parish and varied.

Some counties also have sites through libraries etc.

1901 and 1911 Irish census is available online also.

best wishes

As you may know, Irish research has it's challenges (eg. inc. the destruction of 19th century census records).

There's no 'silver bullet' website for Irish Ancestry, you could try posting some details in a thread here to kick things off?

For me.. I recently found new info for one of mine, I started a new PRIVATE tree on Ancestry and entered the few bits I had, using the best estimate dates I could!

From there, I clicked on the leaf in the centre of someone's profile page and Ancestry FED me the best hints!

In fact it was nearly too easy! For one person the hints were incredible it would be impossible NOT to find him!! I did an Ancestry Search and got over 30,000 Hint returns... I clicked the leaf and got 5 VERY relevant HINTS.

By starting with a new PRIVATE tree it meant I could put new data in without messing up my own tree and then add them to my actual tree when I knew they were actually mine!!
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.
