Death at sea
« on: Sunday 15 September 13 22:54 BST (UK) »
My great aunt died and was buried at sea in 1889 returning from Brisbane Australia to London aboard SS Jumna. I have found the record in BMD at Sea on Find My Past register at Glasgow. Is it possible to obtain a death certificate?

the record you found should have a number or some such so yes you should be able to obtain a cert as normal .

Thank you for your reply. Yes, there is a number with letter 'D' as Regr. General to whom reported and what looks like Eug9 and LB which I guess is logbook as source of information. Any ideas where I should look - Scotland as Glasgow was the Port of Registration or Ireland which was her home?
I would appreciate any guidance.

if the death was registered in Scotland then that's the place to ask , can you give me a name so I can view the details only they don,t ring a bell with any I,ve seen before but I presume all countries have there own system of registration .

Her name is Margaret Irvine, Irish, aged 22 died 3/04/1889 aboard SS Jumna returning from Brisbane. Her family lived in Co Cavan Ireland so that would be her destination.

hi
sorry I didn,t get back sooner life got in the way  ;D.
well as best I can make out from the actual record the death was registered in Glasgow if so I had a look at scotlands people site for marine deaths and that works by different codes 1 to 4 this is a death in code 3 as I see it a death by disease probably tb phthisis being a type of wasting disease .
I wonder if it would be worthwhile your posting this on the Scotland general board if someones got access to scotlands people site they may be able to help more with a look up to see if they can find out more but please remember to mention this post running as well .

I can do that, Trevor, as I have used Scotland's People for other family issues - wonderful site and great to see the records online. I shall use the code 3 and see what comes up. I have emailed the query to them today. They are holiday today so hope for a response shortly. I will post success or failure here! Thanks Susan
