1861 Census. Note this census confirms that John is born circa 1826. George 24 is his brother who we saw on the 1841 census

John Nicholson 35
Sarah Nicholson 45
Ellen Nicholson 11
John Nicholson 7
Ada Nicholson 6
George Nicholson 24

RG 9/3630/28; p: 3
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Thanks for all the help i am going to start looking in to all these possibilities, one thing that has me worried though is the ones found for 1826! I know sometimes census's can be a year or two out but this seems like such a large gap and all census's 1881 onwards have him as 1833 and his marriage in 1873 has him as 40 years old!?
I did assume that at this age of marriage the likelihood was he had been married previously.

And in regards to the last comment on an Ada Beckwith and husband having a John Nicholson (brother) living there, i have the 1881 census for John living with his "2nd" wife and children, however what makes this curious is my Great Grandfather (son of John) is John Beckwith Nicholson!

Also i forgot to mention i cannot find the 1891 census for him, i have his family (wife and children) but hes not there, then he reappears again in 1901 census

I have seen where a family name, in this case John, is used for children of the same father but different mothers.
It might be that Ada's husband was a godparent or that they just liked the name Beckwith since it came into the family!

very true i just noticed that on the 1901 census!

And although the 1881 census with ada would explain where there name Beckwith came from and i have to admit its too much of a coincidence to be looked over the John Nicholson (brother) living with her is far too young and i already have the 1881 census for him! Its all so confusing!
