Reference on Census Records in Birkenhead
« on: Saturday 14 September 13 15:01 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help.
I am looking at two people in the 1891 Census in Birkenhead.
One lived in Market Street and one lived in Sussex Street.
On Ancestry the ref at the base of the page for the person living in Market Street is RG12/2879
the ref for the person living in Sussex Street is RG12 2883.

Would this indicate that these two streets were not too far from each other.
Grateful for any guidance.

No, the piece number you have referenced covers thousands of households, so they are probably not close by.

A good way to answer this query would be to find the streets on an old map, such as at:

Market St still exists and can be found on a map.

Sussex St no longer exists but can be found on an old map:
Go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=331800,388614
Select the "1876 Pre-WWII 1:2500 CHESHIRE" map on the right sidebar.
Sussex St can be seen near where it says Grangeville Terrace in larger letters.

If you look at a modern map, Sussex St was very near St Werburgh's RC Church. As it so happens, this is not too far from Market St, but you could not know this from looking only at the piece numbers.
