Looking for Robert Berry
« on: Saturday 14 September 13 01:56 BST (UK) »
Trying to find Robert Berry (I don't have dates - there's the problem!) I'm guessing that he was born around 1860-1880 as there are two generations since him who are deceased.
I am unsure if he was born in Australia. All I know is that he had a son - John Henry Berry - who had a son Wallace R. Berry d.1966. NSW.
Is there any way of tracing him & finding which country he emigrated from ?- my best guess is Scotland or England.
Hope someone out there can help me - Milly Mac. :)

To narrow down a state I looked for John Henry Berry with a father Robert Berry and found this one.

John H Berry born 1868. Father Robert mother Elizabeth. Dungog, New South Wales Reg # 8872.

Does this look like the correct person?

It might be too early according to your dates of birth for Robert.

Ted, that NSW born chap could be right ..... I think he may have married in 1904  ;D  Very speculative .....  His death cert would list the names of his children .... Perhaps he is the John Henry BERRY (son of Robert and Elizabeth) whose death is registered at Dungog in 1955 (#25155)

Hi Milly,

The following is very speculative, and is drawn solely form my armchair searchings after reading your Opening Post.

I can see there’s a 1966 death registered at the NSW BDM online index for a Wallace Robert BERRY, with parents as John Henry and Grace Ann.  The death was registered at Wallsend (#21255)

Provided the informant gave the correct given names for his parents, then perhaps his parents married at Quirindi in 1904 …. Perhaps their marriage was registered there, in 1904.   I can see on the index that there’s a marriage for a John H BERRY and a Grace A TICKLE (#4748).    That marriage certificate would confirm the details that John and Grace provided about themselves AND their respective parents.  (where/when born/occupation etc for the bride and groom and parents names/occupations and former names etc).  The same information is also available in official transcriptions.  These are cheaper than and arrive quicker than the NSW BDM real deal certificate.

I cannot see a birth registered for Wallace Robert, so it seems to me that if his parents were  John and Grace, that your Wallace may well have older siblings.   I would also suspect that he was born more recently than 1912, as the NSW BDM restricts access to births less than 100 years ago (marriages less than 50 years ago, deaths less than 30 years ago).

If Grace Ann was mother of Wallace Robert,  then perhaps her Probate Packet at the NSW SRO may have information (and perhaps BDM certs) in it.   She died 24 July 1953 and Probate was granted 2 Oct 1975

If the John Henry Berry who died 1955 was father of Wallace Robert, this his probate packet could help too …. He died 11 July 1955 and Probate granted 6 Oct 1955.

This link will help, notice there’s several John Henry BERRY deaths to confuse the searchings.

NSW BDM online index has both the above as deaths registered at Dungog.

Could be, there's quite a number of births at Dungog, to Robert and Elizabeth 1868 to 1892 as per NSW BDM index.  The article mentions his age, and that couple had a son in 1871 named Robert, but I think our OP will need some official transcripts for her Wallace Robert BERRY before proceeding much further.

There's a (NSW) probate packet for him too
Wallace Robert BERRY, died 14 June 1966, Probate granted 27 Sept 1966.

Thank you so much Ted Scout and Majm.
This is indeed the family I am looking for. Do you have any suggestions as to how to trace Robert Berry Snr further back ?- I am trying to find when the family emigrated to Australia and from where. Can't thank you enough for your help so far - amazing!! I've been looking everywhere but the right places for quite a while now  ??? Once again, I am very grateful for all your help. All suggestions gratefully received.
Milly Mac.  :)
