My surname interests: HOLE
« on: Wednesday 15 June 05 16:09 BST (UK) »
I am researching the HOLE family from Dunster.
My great-grandfather was Thomas Warren Hole b.1820 in Dunster. Married Emma Lewis in 1847.  I have all their children.  I am interested in Thomas's siblings: John, William, George Ingram, Henry and their descendants, especially John Warren Hole, son of Henry Hole.  Would be delighted to hear from anyone who is related or who has any information on this family.  Many thanks.

Lawrence.

Hello Lawrence,

I have a Thomas Hole in my family who married  Emma Lewis in 1847.  I think they are probably the same as yours.  They have a daughter called Agnes (my great great grandmother) who married George Brown from Porlock.

Regards
Wendy

Hello Wendy,
Yes, you are quite right.  Thomas Hole and Emma are my great-grandparents.  Agnes was their first child.  Her sister, Betsy Warren Hole, married Frederick Nicholls in 1872.  As you no doubt know, Agnes died of typhoid aged 30 and George Brown re-married.  George and Agnes had three daughters - Annie Emma, Laura Louisa and Ellen Winifred.  There might be other children as well but, if so, I have not discovered them so far.  Laura emigrated to Canada and married George Wood. I assume you are descended from George and Agnes and not from George and his second wife Phoebe?  Are you descended from one of these three daughters?
I have explored the Hole family in great detail and have created an extensive family tree for the names of Hole, Batchelor and Benjafield but I'm sorry to say I do not have your name on it!  I am delighted to hear from you.  Can you tell me who your great-grandparents were and also your grandparents so that I can get the line right?  Very many thanks.

Regards.

Lawrence  (Lawrence Michael Nicholls)

Hello Lawrence,  I am now a little doubtful as to whether I have the right Laura Louisa Brown in my tree - the one I have got married Charles Tizzard in 1898, St Saviours London. Charles was from Walcot, Bath, Somerset.  Laura was my great grandmother.  I shall send for her marriage certificate to confirm her father.  My own father has very little in the way of memories of his family, hence one of the reasons I am doing the family tree.  I have Laura on the 1901 Census as being born in Bath, but on the 1881 Census she is down as being born in Minehead.

Regards
Wendy

Hello Wendy,
Thanks for your reply.  The Laura Louisa Brown I am referring to was born on 14 January 1874 in Minehead.Father: George Brown. Mother: Agnes Brown, nee Hole. I have always understood that she emigrated to Canada and married a George Wood.  Laura's cousin, my aunt Cecily Nicholls, also emigrated to Canada at Laura's instigation apparently and I believe they shared a house until aunt Cecily got married.  I suppose it's possible Laura married Charles Tizzard first of all but I know nothing of it if so.  If you can get her marriage certificate that would be helpful.  I've never obtained a certificate for the marriage to George Wood as I gather they married in Canada. Nor am I aware that they had any children.
Since my previous response I have been reading your various postings on the message board and particularly your message back in August.  It's possible you have moved on since then but, in case not, I should tell you that the situation is not quite as you have described it there.
George Brown married Agnes Hole on 15 September 1870 in Dunster,Somerset. They had three children:
Annie Emma  b. 4 January 1871 in Cardiff
Laura Louisa b. 14 January 1874 in Minehead
Ellen Winifred b. 10 January 1875 in Minehead

Agnes died of Typhoid on 1 October 1878 aged 30,in Minehead.
George re-married - His second wife was Phoebe Hooker & they married on 25 December 1879 in Hackney,London. Phoebe was a sister of Henry Chapman Hooker who married Agnes's youngest sister Jessie Hole.
George and Phoebe had three children:
Arthur Milton Brown b.22 November 1880 in Minehead
Alice Mary Brown b.15 April 1883 in Minehead
George Hubert Brown b. 29 October 1885 in Minehead.

Arthur married Dorothy (I think) and they had two sons - Eric & Dennis
Alice married Frank Pritchard and they had 3 children - Cyril,Keith & Monica. I am in touch with Monica.
Hubert, as he was known, married I don't know who and they had two sons -Lionel & David. I believe Hubert drowned on the S.S. Egypt when it sank in the early 1920s.

George Brown of course is not a blood relative of mine and therefore his descendants from his second marriage are not either.

I think you said you are descended from Agnes in which case you and I would be blood relatives. I would be interested to know the name of your father and grandfather.

Regards,  Lawrence.
