ethel rawling
« on: Wednesday 11 September 13 20:32 BST (UK) »
This is a huge longshot. I always remember as a child visiting what i thought was one of my grandads friends called Ethel who lived on Thornthwaite Road in Windermere.
Im now thinking after a lot of family research that she could have been related. She was definitely called Ethel, she was a similar age to my grandad born 1910. Could she have been his cousin? I dont suppose anyone knew of an Ethel living on that road in Windermere?
I was only very young at the time so didnt take much notice. Were her parents John and Amy?
Unfortunately i habe no one to ask now.
Thanks

Hi

There is a John James (born abt. 1875 Keswick) and Amy Rawling (born abt. 1876 Windermere) living in Windermere, who married 1902, Amy's maiden name being Vickers. In Dec. Qtr. 1915 they did have a daughter Ethel, and a son John Edward born abt. 1907.

Ethel Rawling was the younger sister to my grandad John Edward Rawling (b1906 d2003). She outlived her brother by a few years and lived in Wallsend after marrying her cousin (also Rawling) after her father and step mother died. Ethel and John's mother Amy (nee Vickers) died circa 1910 in her early 40's from an asthma related illness. My grandad remembered being sent to get her medication from the chemist. I would very much like to trace Amy's family tree if anyone would like to share.

Hi Corinne. To my knowledge Ethel left Windermere when her father and step mother died (she had to care for them both). I believe the step mother was also called Ethel and was unkind to Ethel and John Edward, so it was a hard life for Ethel. She corresponded with her cousin who was in the Merchant Navy, and eventually married him and moved to live in Wallsend, where she lived most I her adult life. Her husband died before Ethel and she spent her later years travelling worldwide, so it is possible she visited friends and family in Windermere. I know for a fact that she stayed with my grandparents regularly in Penrith. I now live in my birth place of Northallerton. My dad's younger brother David remained in Cumbria and his family all live in and around Carlisle. Where are you? How far back have you traced the Vickers family?

Margaret was Reg as Margaret

Trees have her Mother as Sarah Jane CROSSFIELD and a Marriage to John READ, 17 Nov 1841, Beetham Parish, Westmorland.
There is no corresponding FreeBMD Reg for that
There is to a possible Sarah HUTTON

From LancsOPC;
Marriage: 1 Jan 1835 St Mary, Ulverston, Lancashire, England
William HUTTON - Mariner, Bachelor, Warton in the County of Lancaster
Sarah Jane CROSFIELD - Spinster, this parish
Witness: Margaret Kendal, (X); Thomas Pennington

1841 Census
Beetham, Westmorland
HO107/1159/1/Beetham
Thomas CROSFIELD, 30, Carpenter
Margaret Crosfield, 30
Frances Crosfield, 3
John Crosfield, 1
John Crosfield, 60, Carpenter
Frances Crosfield, 30
Sarah HUTTON, 25, Female Servant****

Only the 2 young Children are born Westmorland, all the others are not.

On same Census page John Read is living nearby;
Robert GREENWOOD, 60, Merchant?
Isabella Greenwood, 65
Elizabeth Greenwood, 30
Isabella BUSH, 25
Elizabeth PROCTOR, 14
John READ, 25, Male Servant*******

Cant fin a Baptsim for John.
You would need the 1841 M/C to go back further with that Line
