DANIELS of Stroud, Gloucestershire
« on: Monday 09 September 13 21:18 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for anything more I can find about my 4th great grandfather:
Matthew Henry Daniels
b 1808 in Randwick, Glouc. d 1855 in Westbury, Wilts.
m Jane Morse b 1807 in Rodborough, Glouc. d 1876 in Westbury, Wilts.

they had 5 children
William Henry b 1832 in Stonehouse (m Sarah Bull)
Samuel John b 1834 in Stonehouse (never married)
Martha Jane b 1843 in Rodborough (m Edward Penny)
Matthew Walter Henry b 1846 in Rodborough (m Caroline Wells)
Mary Eliza Ann b 1849 in Rodborough

I'm looking to confirm my suspicions that Matthew Henry was the son of William Daniels & Mary Coney of Ebley (around the time of his birth). Would also be great to understand why these Daniels all moved around so much within Stroud. If my suspicions are correct, Matthew was 1 of 6 children born in a variety of places in and around Stonehouse. Matthew himself, also had children ranging from Ebley to Rodborough. He was listed as a 'merchant' in his Will in 1855 but was a clothworker like most everyone else in the area at that time. I suspect he worked at both Ebley and Lodgemore mills.

I'm also interested in his whereabouts in 1851...best guess is either the Merchant Navy or Gloucester Prison for a year for being a "thief." Lots of suspicions, little confirmations...

If anyone shares these ancestors I'm happy to share vitals, wills or whatever I have. I'm of William Henry's line, an engine driver for Great Western, who's son Matthew emigrated to Dundalk, Co. Down, Ireland and married Emily Lucinda McClelland.

Cheers,
H.

Hi,
Henry DANIELS married Jane MORSE at St Mary Magdalene, Rodborough on 18th April 1830, by Banns.
I have checked the Glos Family History Society (GFHS) Gloucestershire Baptism Index 1813-1837 and there is NO sign of a baptism for William Henry DANIELS c.1832 or Samuel John DANIELS c.1834.

Much appreciated Victor, do you know how I would attain a copy of the marriage cert or if Banns records included fathers and mothers and occupations like they tend to.

As for Matthew's children, I have quite detailed profiles for each of them at this point. Both William & Samuel were baptised in Ebley Chapel, Randwick. It was in the Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion (Methodist). Both of them were life long employees of Great Wester Railroad from what I can gather and Samuel lived with his brothers family his entire life.

Thanks again.

Hi,
You can't get a marriage certificate pre-1837. The only alternative is a transcription from the Parish Register (PR), but this won't give you much more info, except the witnesses. If you wish, I will do a transcription for you on my next visit to Glos Archives.
