HERBISON and MULLEN
« on: Wednesday 15 June 05 13:17 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for information about the family in Ireland of my great-great-grandfather, James HERBISON.

James married in Scotland in 1866. His marriage certificate and the 1881 census for Scotland indicate that he was born about 1844 in Ireland. His parents names are given as Thomas Herbison and Margaret Mullen (his mother's surname is not very clear but I think it is Mullen).

I understand that most Herbisons came from Antrim so I thought I would try this list for help.

Thanks.

Helen

Hello Helen,

What was James Herbonson's religious persuasion ? This may reduce the area of search slightly.

Dear Christopher

Thanks for your reply. I'm fairly sure James was presbyterian.

Regards,

Helen

Hi Christopher

Thanks. That may be the family but it seems unlikely as it is rather late for James' birth - though he could have lied about his age. Also, his marriage certificate lists Thomas Herbison as his father. James' first son was named Thomas so it does seem likely that his father was Thomas.

James worked as a coal miner when he came to Scotland, if that helps at all!

Regards,

Helen

If you try this page http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php, then type in Herbison against surname box, choose Antrim from drop down list and click search, you should get a page of names. They include one Thomas Herbison and a location which may help narrow down your search (albeit there will not be enough info to ascertain if he is your Thomas or not - still it may be a step forward). The general area he is shown as living in still contains families with this surname.

Thanks, I've done that and found Thomas. It's kind of tantalising, isn't it? Is this the kind of query that will require a personal visit to Antrim to look at the parish records?

hi Helen

Glad you have found Thomas,a lovely feeling when you find them.

I just wanted to say that some times people did marry at 16 or even 13 when you get back to the 1800's (it was not uncommon)

Maybe you should plan a trip to Ireland and you'll fall in love with it and you'll keep going back again and again..........best place in the world.

Happy hunting

Hi Steve

We are coming across to Ireland this summer but only for a short visit so I don't think there will be time to be rooting around in dusty records - I think a dedicated trip is called for, once I've organised exactly what I need to look for. We visited last year for the first time and had a wonderful trip.

Thanks.
