Long + Lowham 1700-1800s
« on: Monday 09 September 13 03:22 BST (UK) »
I've a gggrandfather by the name of Samuel Long (of course there are 3 by the same name at the time, mine in Sydney, another in South Australia, and probably another in Newcastle NSW.. at least that is what I think, still isolating them out) - died in Sydney in 1897. He had an Aunt whos death made the Sydney papers in February 1869, Mrs. ANNA LOWHAM, in her 110th year, "by the Church, the Church of England Registry of Swords". So by guess work the death would have been some 6? months earlier (mail/papers by ship) say June 1868 ???, possible birth 1757/8?  :o.

I've yet to peruse Samuels' death certificate here, but Annas' death may have made the papers there in Dublin? I've tried http://www.irishnewsarchive.com .. no result.  Any ideas?

I searched the civil registration index for a death of Anna Lowham in 1869, death of Anna (would pick up variations of Anna) died 1869 + born c1759/60, etc. with no results. Suspect that her age was slightly less than that, the surname is incorrect or the death wasn't registered (registeration only started in 1864).

"At Swords, county of Dublin, Ireland, Mrs. ANNA LOWHAM, aunt of Samuel Long, of 57, Botany Road, Sydney, in her 110th year, by the Church, the Church of England Registry of Swords."

Swords, County Dublin makes sense but not the last bit "by the Church, the Church of England Registry of Swords." Unless the family were Church of Ireland and this is a reference to where she was buried?

There was a James Lowham in Commons East, Swords Parish in 1853 (Griffith's Valuation) but he only has a garden and a William Lowham in Townparks, Swords Parish with a small holding but better house than many of his neighbours (going by the valuation)- also a James*, a John and a Samuel in Townparks. *may be the same James as with the garden in Commons East. There may be others but it certainly points to Lowhams living in Swords Parish before the 1869 death.

Added- Rootsireland (pay site) does list C. of I. death records for this period-

"by the Church, the Church of England Registry of Swords."

Yes it poses a puzzle to me too. Possibly corrupted by the journalists at the time...

Maybe "buried by the church" = pauper? Though Samuel looks to be well off in Sydney (selling 2 houses at one time, elected to the council, contracts to do council works, importing goods... ).

Samuel died 1897, possible birth 1795 (probably Dublin area, daughter was supposed to be born there too) due to age stated at death. So an aunt born in 1757 is possible.  Bit old but then possible.

There are two Lowham marriages you might want to take note of in Swords.
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/
Peter Lowham a coachman married a Longmore in 1884 his father William was a stonemason.

Catherine Lowham married in 1873 her father also a William was a Tradesman.

Here's another reference to her death - see 3rd column, 3rd item from top in the original image:
http://www.teesdalemercuryarchive.org.uk/extra/pdfviewer/pdfviewer.php?date=1868-11-11&startpage=2

The text says:
"Saunders' News Letter says: " A woman named Anne Lowham, aged 107 years,-:died at Swords on
Thursday. She was born in 'the year 1761. She was the mother of five sons and three daughters. One of Her great-grand-children is now a constable in the metro-politan police." "

Saunders Newsletter was a Dublin newspaper. There are some copies in dublincity.ie archives but not covering 1868.

Also, there is an entry in the rootsireland.ie website for her death but no year specified, though age  given as 106.  It's in Dublin North section and is definitely in Swords Church of Ireland parish.  You have to buy credits to see any further details.

Excellent John... I'll chase that rootsireland.ie ... when I find the right thing .. I may have skipped the Lowham and just done the Long there? Too many places to look and it gets confused. More scotch?

Sinann - those could be her grandchildren?

There is one more mention of her death in the Freemans Journal. The text is much the same as the one posted by johnjensen. It is dated Friday 30th October 1868 and begins "Yesterday an old woman aged 107 years named Anne Lowham died at Swords......
That gives her a date of death of 29 October 1968
