Hi from one Muppet to another ;D. Only joking Fiona!
Which of the records are you struggling to find and I'll see if I can help.

My last find was on (removed wrong web address)   Just click on the link- choose 1851 Census from dropbox - key in Burnside under surname and Eliza under forename age 5 then plus or minus 5 years. Then submit search. That will give you a few options to look at.

Let me know if there are any others I can help you find,

Looby :)

Hi
A bit confused 1870 US Census has John and Elisabeth in Dunkirk, New York.
The census was taken on 1st June and the marriage we were looking at was on the 13 June 1870.
There was also an Elizabeth Burnside arrived by ship 9 June 1970

Have found lots on Daniel and Helen McLean but can't find anything on Jane Stoddart

Help!

Hi Fiona,

Have you looked at the original record of John and Elizabeth McLean on the US 1870 Census on Familysearch?

At the very top of the page it reads  Inhabitants of the Town Of Dunkirk in the County of Chautauqua, state of New York enumerated by me on the 14th day of August 1870 signed Charles Koch?? asst. Marshall

That appears to suggest that the census was taken later than the 1st June :)

I saw the arrival of an Elizabeth Burnside on 9th June 1870 at Castle Gardens too. Unfortunately there is not enough info to know if this is your Elizabeth. But it could be that John McLean and Elizabeth were "engaged" to be married in Scotland, John went on ahead to US to find work and a home and when they could afford it Elizabeth followed and the couple married quickly after her arrival. We cannot know if this was the case , but incidents like this happened.

Did you find Elizabeth and her family on the 1851 Scottish Census?  It lookks to me like Jane Stoddart was dead by then :(. I will have another look.

Looby :)

Thanks Fiona  :)

I think I've found the Burnsides getting married -Jean Stoddart to John Burnside 2 Sept 1838 at Glasgow, Lanark.
Their first child as Jim1 has already posted was John McMorland Burnside on 7 June 1839.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X171-QY1

The family appear to be at Greenock, Renfrewshire living at Cartsburn Street by the 1841 Census-
John Burnside - aged 25 Blacksmith Jrnymn   Born outside Census county
Jane Burnside - age 25                                Born outside Census county
John Burnside - age 2                                  Born outside Census County

Eliza Penney Burnside is born to the couple 7th Apr 1845 at Barony Lanarkshire
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X19R-S25

Knowing the Scottish naming traditions there is a possible chance that Eliza/Elizabeth's maternal grandmother's maiden name was Eliza/Elizabeth Penney and that the paternal Grandmother could have been McMorland :-\. Then again the middle names could have come from someone else family/friend/minister. But it could be a clue to tracing back further.

I have a possible family for 1851 Census which would indicate that Jane/Jean Stoddart is dead.

86 Clyde Street, Anderston, Barony Lanarkshire

Neill Munro     head   age 21    M   Grocer         Born England
Amelia Munro  wife    age 20    U   Grocer's wife Born England
Elizabeth Munro Dau  age 1     U                         "       "
John Burnside  Visitor age 35  W   Agricultural Labourer Born Renfrewshire, Kilpatrick
John Burnside  Visitor age 11   U    Scholar Lab's son         Born Glasgow , Lanarkshire
Elizabeth Burnside Visitor age 6 U    Scholar Lab' Dau        Born Renfrewshire, Greenock
Ann Mathieson    Visitor   age 35 M    General Servant      Born Courthill, Ross & Cromarty

These look like good candidates for the family.
If Jane/Jean Stoddart has died between Elizabeth's birth and 1851 Census, it is unlikely that you will find a register of her death. :(

Looby :)

Where did you find the marriage of John Burnside and Jean/Jane Stoddart?
Can't find it on Ancestry or Scotland's People
