Thanks so much. The 1871 census on familysearch is correct. Henry had been married previously to a Rosehannah Witten/Whitton/Whitten (1832/3-1866) before marrying Hannah.
I couldn't spot a death for her although I saw her in 1861.
It is best to post whatever information you already know - as Henry and Hannah are mistranscribed in 1871, it took quite a time to find them - and then you already knew!!
I am not sure how much information you will gain by sending for the marriage cert for H and H or the birth certificate for May as you already have that info.
Is it possible to find out more about the Perrin/Morris marriage?
My apologies for not including all the information, but I set off really trying to find the birth of May Phillips.
What I have is the birth certificate of my grandfather (James Alfred Perrins) who was born in South Africa in November 1898. He was born to James Frederick Perrins and a May Phillips. JFP died between 1898 and 1901 and May remarried a George Harcourt Morris on 20 June 1901 stating that she was a widow. My grandfather then decided to change his name completely to James Frederick Morris - usually called Fred.
I recently applied for the death notice of May only to discover that her parents were listed as Henry and Hannah Perrins, and that is where the total confusion began!
The death notice also confirms the following:
a son - James Frederick Perrins (known of as Morris)
Birth place - Tutbury
Surviving spouse - George Harcourt Morris
I have been in touch with someone doing the Perrins tree as far as Henry and Hannah goes. He told me that Hannah Perrins' death notice confirms a daughter May who married a George Morris. Unfortunately no dates or any other information regarding this is given on her death notice.
I have always presumed that my g/grandmother was a May Phillips as stated on her son's birth certificate, and that I was just unable to find information regarding her birth on the internet. I now am faced with the problem that either the information on the birth certificate was wrong, or that the death notice is wrong.
Unfortunately I have been unable to trace the death notice for Fred (who died in what is now Zambia) nor have I been able to trace any information regarding James Frederick Perrins who married May Phillips, other than the fact that he was born in England and that they married in the Transvaal.
As you can see from the above I have a confusing mystery on my hands, and two sets of papers - my grandfather's birth certificate and May's death notice which contradict each other with regard to her origins.
