So what's the difference between a publican and an innkeeper?

Publican is a term for someone who keeps a public house which provides drink but does not provide food or lodgings. An Inn (Inn-keeper) was where persons were provided with food and drink and lodgings. A  victualling house (Licensed Victualler) was one where persons were provided with food and drink but not lodgings,
A Beer House was only licensed to sell beer, a Public House could also sell wines and spirits.

Thank you, Stan  :)

So, until 1896, the Beehive/Clark's House only provided drinks and then they got more hospitable   :D

Just to add that places providing food and drink but not lodgings were called Taverns. LIcensing laws changed over time so those descriptions could vary.

Thanks Stan .
I wondered about that because my best friend from childhood's father was a "publican" in Blyth.

I would love to see an image of this watercolour as I've had Sunday lunch there a few times in the past.

Inside there was a rabbit warren of tiny rooms with wonky doorways and floors. We often found friends had been eating in an adjoining room when we went to pay the bill!

I've heard it is recently under new management so don't know if the room configuration has been changed.
