Assuming the death registration for Frances is the right one, her probate claims at the time
of her death she was living in Bilton, Harrogate :

As Brian has already said, this is Frances who died in 1937 :

Death, Dec qtr 1937
Frances Morrell, age 80
Knaresbro', Vol 9a, page 146

And the reason for me repeating it, here's the probate for the above person :

Morrell, Frances of Daisy Cottage, Bachelor Gardens, Bilton, Harrogate widow died
7th December 1937. Probate London 25th January to Samuel Pickup Crowther engineer
and Percy Heworth Gill dairyman.
Effects £422 7s 11d

Confirming my contact has (he believes) found the relevant burial information.
(Sent Pels a pm prior to exchanging information as there is plenty to discus.)

Just to clear up any confusion this is not the Frances who was married to John MORRELL.
MI from St. John the Evangelist, Bilton, Harrogate ...

In affectionate remembrance of / my beloved husband / Joseph I. MORRELL / Knox House Farm / died Nov 10th 1925 aged 66 years / Also of Frances / wife of the above / died Dec 7th 1937 / aged 80.

The Frances MORRELL you are looking for, I think, is the lady who died in 1942.

Deaths Dec 1942 / MORRELL, Frances / 80 / Knaresbro' 9a 106

At the risk of repeating myself here goes (this message has already been sent to several people but now I will post it here) ... please read carefully ...

As pointed out in my last post on this thread (and I will elaborate here) the lady who died in 1937 is definitely NOT your Frances.

Deaths Dec 1937 / MORRELL, Frances / 80 / Knaresbro' 9a 146

Her age doesn't fit with any of the census returns where she shows her DOB to be between 1860 and 1862 and the consensus in the trees on Ancestry seems to be that she was born on the 16th December 1860. I don't know why this death has been assumed to be correct. In my opinion it isn't!

This Frances left a will which shows she died in Bilton, Harrogate on the 7th December 1937.

MORRELL, Frances of Daisy Cottage, Bachelor Gardens, Bilton, Harrogate widow died
7th December 1937. Probate London 25th January to Samuel Pickup CROWTHER, engineer
and Percy Heworth GILL, dairyman.
Effects £422 7s 11d

This same Frances was the wife of Joseph Inman MORRELL of Knox House Farm, who died in 1925. They are buried together at Bilton, St John the Evangelist in Harrogate.

In affectionate remembrance of / my beloved husband / Joseph I. MORRELL / Knox House Farm / died Nov 10th 1925 aged 66 years / Also of Frances / wife of the above / died Dec 7th 1937 / aged 80.

Deaths Dec 1925 / MORRELL, Joseph I / 66 / Knaresbro' 9a 131

Joseph also left a will ...

MORRELL, Joseph of Knox House Farm, Bilton, Harrogate died 10 November 1925. Probate London 1 February 1926 to John William MORRELL, farmer and Joseph FLETCHER, sexton. Effects £2224 17s 4d.

Joseph & Frances are at Knox House Farm in 1911. Shown as married 12 years (no children).

Marriages Sep 1898 / ABRAM, Frances / MORRELL, Joseph Inman / Knaresbro' 9a 189

There are two other MORRELL graves at Bilton, St John ...

John Wm. MORRELL, d. Aug 12th 1927, age 73 / Annie Mary, his wife, d. Nov 30th, 1925, age 66.

George MORRELL, of Bilton, d. Jan 9th 1888, age 74 / William Alfred, his son, d. Dec 27th 1880, age 5y 11m / Jane, his wife, d. Nov 25th 1906, age 76

So ... if we assume (your) Frances (wife of John) did die in Yorkshire that leaves only 3 other possibilities for a death of the right age (give or take a year or two).

Sep Q 1911 / Frances MORRELL / Age 50 / Bramley 9b 350
Mar Q 1938 / Frances E. MORRELL / Age 77 / Wharfedale 9a 184
Dec Q 1942 / Frances MORRELL / Age 80 / Knaresborough 9a 106

The lady who died in 1911 is buried at Armley Cemetery (from Yorkshire Indexers Database) ...

Grave B63 (Consecrated)
WATSON, James Ferdinand / 3 years / 3rd Jun 1899 / Abode not shown
MORRELL, Frances / 50 years / 6th Sep 1911 / Abode not shown
WALTON, Annie / 65 years / 9th Feb 1921 / Abode not shown
SMITH, Ann / 77 years / 17th Jun 1927 / Abode not shown
MORRELL, John Edward / 68 years / 30th Dec 1931 / 8 Abbott Road, Armley

I think it's safe to assume this is Frances SMITH, who married John Edward MORRELL in Leeds Mar Q 1886 (9b 394). YorkshireBMD shows they were married at Burley, St. Mathias. In the 1911 census at 8, Abbot Road are John Edward & wife Frances with son George William.

The lady who died in 1938 I'm quite sure is Frances Elizabeth THACKRAY, who married Tom MORRELL in Dec Q 1884 (Leeds 9b 574) at Headingley, St. Michael, and they are together in 1911 with daughter Blanche at Grassfield Terrace, New Road Side, Horsforth (in Wharfedale RD). This Frances and husband Tom were buried at Horsforth Cemetery (from Yorkshire Indexers Database) ...

Horsforth. Grave Green 670
MORRELL, Frances Elizabeth / Age 77 / 30 March 1938
Description: Widow
Place Of Death: 136 New Road Side, Horsforth

MORRELL, Tom / Age 58 / 30 July 1919
Description: Plate Layer
Place Of Death: 136 New Road Side, Horsforth

So I would (almost certainly) say the Frances who died in 1942 is the one you should be looking for. Unless she remarried ... or moved a long way away!

Late as ever and after digesting all the above info more than once, 'footprints55' should be well impressed. I know I am.

It was fortunate that Brian had the good sense to contact you, Paul.

The Frances MORRELL you are looking for, I think, is the lady who died in 1942.

Deaths Dec 1942 / MORRELL, Frances / 80 / Knaresbro' 9a 106

Well found ! We were too busy concentrating on the original request believing it to be right.

So far this is the only one I can't account for :

Death, Sep qtr 1931
John Morrell, age 76
Knaresbro', Vol 9a, page 97

If these were my relatives I'd love to see the contents of those two certificates. At least it would help confirm when they died and if right, where they were buried. Might even put a couple of those Ancestry trees on the right track.

Brilliant stuff !  :)

Kind regards,

Pels.

Deaths Dec 1942 / MORRELL, Frances / 80 / Knaresbro' 9a 106

I have now found a death with the same GRO Index reference details as Frances ...

Deaths Dec 1942 / DICKINSON, Thomas / 92 / Knaresbro' 9a 106

I'm not exactly sure how the GRO indexing system works but this would indicate to me that Thomas DICKINSON died on the same day (or within a day or two of) and in the same Parish as Frances MORRELL.

Thomas DICKINSON was buried at Brearton, St John the Baptist (www.gravestonephotos.com).

Also, purely and unbelievably coincidentally, this Thomas DICKINSON, who I believe married Harriett MARRIOTT (unfortunate name) in 1874, was the adoptive father of Celia SMITH.

Celia married Edgar George MORRELL in 1904. Edgar George MORRELL was the son of John & Frances MORRELL.

All of the above was sourced on Ancestry. Feel free to ask if you can't find anything on there and I'll point you in the right direction.

Please note the MI's for Brearton, St John the Baptist on the Gravestone Photos site are not complete, although they claim to be. They have 46 headstones photographed but the MI's which were taken in the 1970's by Harrogate & District FHS (and are available at Harrogate Library) have 86 headstones recorded. Maybe since that time some of the headstones have fallen and have been lost under the turf. I've seen that happen a lot and excavated a few myself!

Anyway, there are 2 MORRELL graves listed in the HDFHS MI's ...

Grave 33
In / loving memory / of Florence MORRELL / died 6th Nov 1981 / aged 90 years / And of / Algernon Clyde / dearly loved husband of / the above / died 6th April 1983 / in his 87th year.

Grave 63
In / loving memory of / my dear husband / Edgar George MORRELL / died Feb 11 1944 / aged 63 years / Late of Sunny Bank, Scotton.

(Algernon Clyde MORRELL was also the son of John & Frances)

Also mentioned on the War Memorial are T.C. MORRELL (Royal Engineers) & W.S. MORRELL (Royal Engineers), who both served (but did not die) in WWI.

(Probably Terrell Claude & William, both sons of John & Frances)

The accompanying grave plan shows a lot of empty space in the churchyard, presumably unmarked graves.

I would be very surprised if Frances (and probably John) are not buried at Brearton. I've looked at MI's for all the other local churchyards and they don't show up, although I'll go back and re-check sometime.

North Yorkshire burial registers are at the County Records Office in Northallerton, which is a bit out of the way for me (www.northyorks.gov.uk/archives).

(Brearton and the whole of Harrogate and Knaresborough (Claro) district is now in North Yorkshire, we were in the West Riding until 1974).

If the death certificate confirms that Frances died in Brearton in 1942 I would get in touch with them and ask them to do a quick search.

If they know the exact date of death and Parish it shouldn't take them more than a few minutes to find the relevant entry and they won't whack you with a huge bill. Probably wouldn't be more than a few pounds to cover their costs.

Regards,
Paul

Paul,

Wow, wow, wow  :o :o ....am very thankful for all the research that you have done. It is somewhat amazing.

Have read all the data you have provided for this thread, and have decided to order the relevant certificates from the GRO.

As you suggest, these certificates will provide me with the relevant details that I require. This will either confirm or deny whether these people are my ancestors or not.

I will then hopefully be able to put the final pieces of the puzzle in place...

Will keep you updated.

Cheers

OK, no worries.
Let us know how you get on.

Is a puzzle ever finished? Isn't that the definition of a puzzle?

Hi Paul,

You are very right ....... an ancestral puzzle seems to take a twist in a different direction when you least expect it ...... but isn't that all part of the fun....or why else do we become so addicted.

Cheers
