3 generations of Joseph E. Dickers in NYC
« on: Thursday 05 September 13 09:31 BST (UK) »
3 generations of Joseph E. Dickers in NYC but what's the middle initial stand for?

Joseph E. Dickers, b Aug 1857 New York
Joseph E. Dickers, b May 1883 New York (son of above)
Joseph E. Dickers, b 15 Oct 1906 New York (nephew of above)

Might help narrow down the first Joseph's father (William Dickers b1824+) UK origins.

Regards - Michael, Liverpool, UK.

I had that issue in my tree.....there are 10 Thomas W. Morris'.  Turns out, the "W" is for Whittaker, which is the maiden name of the woman, Anne Whittaker, to marry the first Thomas Morris.  Additionally, her full name was Anne Burke Whittaker, Burke being the maiden name of her mother.   Subsequent children also used other maiden surnames as the middle name (is this an English naming pattern??).

Perhaps there is a maiden name somewhere back in the line that begins with "E"?    I also pulled up a couple of obits, but, all only list "E" and nothing further.  William is buried in Calvary, in case you don't have that info.

Cheers everything.relative - I've got the burial info for William and the Joseph obits with only E.

I'm working on a suggestion that William might be a William Baylis Dicker who had a brother Edwin Dicker. Both were born in London to a father Joseph Dickers and Margaret Baylis. Edwin has eventually settled in Belfast and William has gone off the radar however there is a William Dicker arriving in NYC in 1848 on board a ship from Belfast. Was thinking that William's son in New York might have been named after Joseph and Edwin. If Edwin is the middle initial E then I reckon it might be a pretty good bet given the combination of Joseph and Edwin which in itself is an unusual name?

Cheers again - Michael.

Hi everything.relative,

Reckon I'm on the wrong road.

The Joseph E. Dickers, b 15 Oct 1906 New York dies 11 June 1985 in Broward, Florida. There's a July 1980 marriage record for a Joseph Eugene Dickers also in Broward, Florida. Either same person getting married late or a descendant? Either way the E. could be Eugene.

Another closed door!

Hmmmm…..have you gotten a copy of  the eldest Joseph’s DC yet?
Dickers Joseph E 60 y Dec 29 1919 33865 Manhattan  (born abt 1859)

You may already have seen this, but didn't want to lose it in case you hadn't:
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1919 New York Herald
TWO OLD EMPLOYEES IN SURROGATES' OFFICE DEAD
Within a few hours, two employees of  the Surrogates' office, who had been in
the city's service for more than a quarter of a century and were particular cronies,
have passed away. Joseph E. Dickers, a clerk in the recording department, living at No. 166 East Eighty-third street, was stricken with heart disease while on his Way  home  o n Monday night and died in  a n  elevated tram before the arrival of a Physician.

Also found:
Daniel E Dickers, son of Joseph E,  248 East 84th Street died on May 14th, 1903
Catherine Sutton Dickers, November 30, 1931 (no husband listed), mother of Frank, Walter, Fred, Helen & Joseph
Are either of these pertinent to your Dickers line?

It may be that they all had different middle names beginning with the letter E (happened in a family I was researching and caused a bit of confusion until I eventually found their middle names).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi everything.relative

I've got the death date and notification (from I think NY Times) but never bothered with the certificate. I didn't have the notification you've included.

All are pertinent to my Dickers line. Joseph (died 1919) was a first cousin to my GGGrandmother, Daniel was a son of his and Catherine was (I think off the top of my head) a daughter-in-law (married to Joseph b1883) but re-married to Sutton after husbands death in 1906.
