St Olave Bermondsey - Workhouse / School records
« on: Wednesday 04 September 13 11:13 BST (UK) »
I'm hoping someone can help me track down some information about my uncle, James Fitzpatrick Kellard, who was born in 1905. From what I have been able to ascertain, he grew up in an Orphanage in Southwark, before being shipped to Canada to start a new life by the Southwark Guardians in July in 1921.

His birth records show him as being born at 38 Parish St, Horselydown, which I know was v close to the site of the St Olave Union Workhouse in Bermondsey, I'm just not sure if that means he was actually born in the workhouse, and where the Southwark Guardians come into the story.

I would love to find out more about his early life, in particular whether he spent all of his first 15 yrs in a workhouse/orphanage before going to Canada, what records exist of his family, why Canada was seen as his best option for him etc. Can anyone help?

Good morning
There is a birth  for a James Kellard  9.10.905 at Parish St Workhouse  Bermondsey. He is roman catholic and the son of a Catherine Kellard age 32.He was born in the workhouse.
She's a bit old to be an unmarried mother and she may have been the Catherine Louisa Markham who married James Kellard Mar 1895 St Giles  1b 637.
She may however be the Catherine Kellard age 9 born Islington daughter  of Edward age 39 bootmaker  born Ireland and Anne Kellard 40 Islington  142 snows Field Bermondsey.1881.

Thanks so much for the information.

Do you know how I would find out more about what happened to him after his birth? I'm interested to know when his mother left the workhouse, whether she took him with her or if he was there through to the age of 15, if he was transferred to an different orphanage, and so on.

I can find no record of either of them on the 1911 census.

Thanks again!
