Suggestions needed of where I go from here - re GLEAVE

I have traced my ancestors back to John Gleave 1706 in Great Budworth, Cheshire.  I know he had a son William married to Sarah Ryder in 1761.  There are many John Gleaves, Gleaves or Glayves around that time and in Great Budworth but as I don't know which one he is I've been unable to find who his wife and Williams mother was.  Can anyone suggest where my steps should be?

Even if you have the parish record books in front of you it is very difficult to research and PROVE ancestry back in the 1700s or before, did he own land, did he write a will was he in official office those are about the only records that can extend your research back ( if you want YOUR ancestors in your tree)  and then it is only likley to be one line and not family records....

I have only been able to research one line of mine back so much further which I wouldn't say is 'family history' but line history because generation after generation passed on land and homes, wrote Wills and were in local and national office, mentioned also in Manorial records because his daughter married into a high ranking noble family, gifts to the community, ie letters to the King asking permission to build a hospital , almshouses and donate land........ so ancestors that far back have to be rich or rogues or you don't have records to find generally and even parish records leave a lot to be desired, when it says, "John baptised his du on 23 Jan 1699" Which John, Which daughter  and no mention of a mother.
So like us all if you want your ancestors in your tree you have to accept a natural end to a line...and work on another line

Thanks for your advice.  You have confirmed what I feared is probably the end of the road.  I will probably do more research into land, wills etc as the family did believe the line went back to the Doomsday book but as you say there are so many of them and no proof as to which one is the right one.  Thanks again

Thank you she is a pain, a 6 month old rescue Burmese who was on the streets for a month being fed by neighbours, no one knew where she came from. I advertised her on the radio, newspapers,  all the shops, all the local cat rescues and she was on FB for 2 months before I said tough! I will have her. But she has no sense, she has a carrier bag fetish, in the first month left me daily unwanted presents on the beds ( instead of in her litter tray)so I know why she was abandoned.

We all go back to the Doomsday Book and before, proving it is impossible unless of course you are happy to be a name collector

This may or may not be of use. 

I suggest you look on the internet at the Family History Society of Cheshire website.  An Altricham Branch (which I have a feeling has now closed) member by the name of Peggy Sumner has written a book on the Gleaves of High Legh and Dunham and this book contains the trees of many Gleaves of Cheshire.  It may be of help to you. 

Although the Altrincham Branch is closed, I am sure the FHSC will have a copy of this book at their Archive Centre in Mobberly.

Might be worth a try ?

Hi daisynook,

I have been relatively successful by trying to piece together family groups from a combination of available records, such as baptism, marriage and burial - and then seeing if there are any MI records for the families which will underpin your research.  I believe that Cheshire FHS have published the Great Budworth MI's - unless you have already tried this path?

Depending on occupation there may be more information available.  For example, there are records of farms and farmers available free on the Arley Archives site which would have covered much of the Great Budworth area: http://www.arleyhallarchives.co.uk/

I hope you don't mind me posting here but my ancestor was a Betty Gleave who married a William Andrews in 1805 in Daresbury, Cheshire ... have you come across this family in your research?

I am trying to work back over with both of them, and have struggled to find deaths.
