Have you checked freebmd for a marriage between 1891-1901?

If none found - have you looked for her on the 1901 census.

According to the 1881 and 1891 entries - she was born in Leeds - not Bramley

The family were living in Wortley which is in the Bramley registration district in 1891

In 1891 Annie is described as 19 and a totter?

Hi Betty,

So far I haven't been able to find Annie after 1891 - but then I was side tracked when
I spotted her occupation.

When you say Annie's occupation was a Totter, I think the 'T' was most likely an 'N'. If you compare these images, the first letter of her occupation is the same as the letter 'N' in New Wortley, not similar to the 'T' in Teacher.

I'm wondering whether she could have been a Netter (a net maker) ??

.

Hello all,
thanks for the replies and regarding the 'totter'bit you could very well have hit on her occupation not that I really know what a netter is! Yes I've had a look on the 1901 census but Annie is a very common name and so far I've had no luck. Thinking of trying tracing her aunt's and uncles marriages to see if anyone was kind enough to take her in after her Gran's death in1897

Will  press on regardless
Thanks again

Hi,

Perhaps Annie's occupation was 'Notter' not 'Netter'. There were many woollen mills in this area and Annie could have been a Piecener (or Piecer), a person who tied broken threads together.

Ian

p.s. I can't see a marriage or an entry on the 1901 census for Annie yet.

Hi again,

I think I have found your Annie.

Emma Giles (66) died 19 /1/1896 and was buried in New Wortley Cemetery, Leeds on 22/1/1896, Consecrated grave 5929.

Also in this grave are Arthur Giles (10), son of James & Emma who died 20/7/1882, buried 22/7/1882, of Renton Place.

James Giles (82) died 11/2/1911, buried 14/2/1911, of 2 Gilpin Street.

John William Giles (94), buried 17/5/1958, of 3 Torbay Grove.

Emma's abode at time of death was Market Weighton, Yorkshire. Checking marriages around Market Weighton there is one registered at Pocklington (about 5/6 miles from Market Weighton) Q4 1894 Ref. 9d 151 between Annie Giles and Thomas Howbridge.

In 1901 they were living back in Leeds at 9 Dent Street. Thomas born c1874 Market Weighton and Annie born 1872 Leeds.

In 1911 they are recorded on the census in Knaresborough, Yorkshire. We are not allowed to post details of this census but you can look it up yourself.

There is a photograph of the grave in New Wortley Cemetery on www.yorkshireindexers.co.uk in the 'Gallery' section.

Regards, Ian
