Daughter's married names & a "Stork Dealer" ?
« on: Thursday 29 August 13 00:14 BST (UK) »
I'm having trouble reading some of the daughters married names in this will and also the occupation in the bequest of the undertakers business to John Rose who is a "Stork Dealer"   ???   of Limehouse.

I think he's the husband of the first daughter, Charlotte on first line, so makes sense he's taking on the business.

thanks for any more attuned eyes than mine, Pete

:-\ It does look like Stork dealer, however I'm not too experienced or attuned really!

... surnames I come up with are Scott, Fenton and Crawford

:) mare

quick ps ... it's probably stock dealer?

Perhaps Mary Ann Denton (rather than Fenton?). Compare the capital D in Dealer.

I agree Stock Dealer, of Wellington Place, Limehouse. Compare stock in trade in the line below

Yep, I see that now too, Denton looks far more likely.

Yup its definitely Denton, found marriage plus Crawford is right too as just found that marriage as well.

Scott looks likely to be right but I've got Banns from 1827 in Poplar with surname "Ellnor".. I need to keep digging...

Oddly I can't find the Rose marriage so far but I've found him in census and he does indeed carry on the business of undertaking.

Stock does make more sense  ::)

It may be stock, as in cattle.

Quick update.

Have confirmed from John Rose's first child's baptism entry that he was definitely a Livestock Dealer in Limehouse.  However I can't actually find his marriage to Charlotte  ::)   ...however given Charlotte's mother and father snuck off to Ealing to get married when her mother was only 16  :o  (marriage is by Banns, no parental consent noted and looks like "rent a witness") it could be history repeating itself..

In 1835 another child's baptism entry show's he has then begun working as an undertaker and of course the will tells us in 1837 he inherits the undertaking business from his mother-in-law and a further child's baptism entry shows moves from Limehouse to Poplar.  Carries on in this living in Poplar high street until at least 1851 census but after that I lose them.  Would be interesting to know how long the business went on for (based at 55 Poplar High Street).

Denton and Crawford are spot on and I have the marriages now, but can't confirm Scott as can't find a marriage  :'(
