Hi, Can Anyone help please -- Alcock's

Hi, if anyone can help I would appreciate it immensely - seem to have hit a big Brick Wall..

My 2 x GGrandfather William Alcock was born 5th December 1871 on Birth certificate just gives the mothers name as Mary Alcock and living at Flower and Dean Street, she being a comb seller. There is no fathers name apparently.

I have found a baptism on 31st December where it read William was the son of William and Mary living at 34 Flower and Dean Street and William is shown as a Labourer.

William Jr went on to Marry Rose Ann Addlesea Ward in 1899 and later shown on the census as living in Lincoln with his wife and children , However I can find no information between him being born and married - nor can I trace his parentage at all .. Very frustrating ..

I have seen snippets of census but nothing complete that seems to add up or give me any further info , I have been told there may be info on the British newspaper archive however I don't have access :-(

Any help would be very much appreciated ... Spent hours trawling online !!

If you enter William Alcock into the newspaper archive on FindMyPast you get 1045 hits!

I think we may need more info (Places,dates eg) to find which entry you think may be 'your' chap.

Hi thanks for your replies, all I know was that he was supposedly mentioned in the newspaper because of some petty crime when he was aged about 10 I think so will have been about 1881??? - its hearsay ... he lived at the time on Flower and Dean Street, which I gather was rather a notorious place, I have tried searching to no avail so far.

That's probably because he was serving in the army (Lincolnshire Regiment). If you purchase a few credits at Find My Past you can download his service record (12 pages).

Lovely Thankyou - I will take a peek at some point, It seems that no matter which subscription you are currently subscribing to you need another the one downside of being interested in this kind of thing ... Eh well hope them lottery numbers pan out - why cant one website be enough I already pay a fortune each month to the "other" site!!!!!

I think it will be worth your while. Apart from his military service and pension details, the record makes reference to his siblings, and provides details of his marriage and his death

He joined the Army (Lincs reg) in 1887 aged 14,and stayed there for 21 years-hence why he doesn't appear on any early censuses.

He had a younger brother called George who joined the Beds Reg.
Also another brother and a sister,neither are named.

He died on 28th Dec 1943 in Halifax of a cerebral haemorhage.
