Joseph Small Hildens wife Jane ???

Hello,

the 1911 census shows Joseph Small Hilden and his wife Jane camped in a Kent hop garden.

Class RG14 piece 4556 schedule 100A.

Janes birthplace and date is given as Dover in 1869.The image says married 23 years.

Ive been unable to find them between 1881,when hes with his parents and using their alias of Smith,and this entry.

The only remote possibility is this:

1891

Joseph Smith born 1869 Canterbury

Hilda born 1873 Chatham.

Embers Smith born 1891 Folkstone.

Living under canvas in the right area for this family.

Class RG12 Piece 754 Folio28 p3

Please can anyone find them on the 1901,or a more likely entry for 1891.

Also,who Jane was before she married.I can find no marriage for Joseph,nor any likely Janes on earlier census born c1869 Dover.

As well as the alias Smith,Joseph also used his mothers surname Small,and variants of Hilden,such as Hilding,Yelding,Yeilding,Gelding etc.

Are you descended from one of their children?  If so - can you give details of the child as we may be able to trace them that way

Also,on the schedule it says Mr J Hilden ( first gave name as Small ),no settled address,camped in Hop Garden,Crixhill,Goodnestone,Canterbury.

Im not descended from one of their children,if they had any;so far ive found none as this is the only census entry i have for them.

My connection is through a cousin from several generations back who married a widow Rose Stanley,father Thomas Small,general dealer.Im looking at the possibility that Rose is Rosa Hilden,daughter of Thomas Hilden and Angelina Small.This man is Rosas brother.As with other Romany connections ive found,im just looking at the family out of intrest and searching for any info i can find on them.

I believe joseph hilden /small is actually joseph emmett born 1883 whose father was alexander emmett his (joseph) brother frank took the name small and is my wifes great grandfather there mother was gentillia eldon and gentillias mother was charlotte small ,alexanders mother was sussannah lee so thats where lee/emmett/hilden/small name game comes from

I am not up on the Hilden's even though my wife's sister is married to one he is not sure of his roots only that his family may have moved from the Ashford area of Kent to Faversham in Kent, there is a couple of Hilden Families in the area other than his who's grandfathers were called Nelson and Tommy one family I know married into the Beeny (V) family if it is any help to you.
