John Frederick Boyd -1840s arrival?
« on: Tuesday 27 August 13 12:07 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out who John Frederick BOYD's parents were and when exactly he came to New Zealand. He was married in 1850 to Mary Ann POTE. He lived in Wellington, but in later life moved to Whangarei, where he died on 13 January 1900. Newspaper obit says he was 88; death cert states 85, occupation tailor. It offers no clues as to his parents, and place of birth is listed as England. A tree on Ancestry says London, but likewise no parental clues. I find a John Boyd born in London 1811, but baptised 1814, and the father's occupation is listed as a weaver, but that is a tenuous connection to say the least. There are around 14 other John Boyds I can see listed as being baptised between 1810 and 1820. It may be a long shot, but finding him on a shipping list may give a clue as to where in England he actually came from. Any help or suggestions most welcome!

A little more searching finds him on jury lists in New Plymouth n the 1850s, so maybe he was from Devon instead of London?...

Hello,

This would be a bit of a stretch but were there any children born 1875 or later?
Around this time the birth registration information included the birthplace of the parents...........

Hello...

Archives NZ list the following record...

Naval and Military Land Claims Commissions, 1896 and 1910
BOYD, John Frederick - Wellington Defence Force, Whangarei

http://archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=8097107

Worth a look as it may mention a regimental number, which may in turn lead to an enlistment record.

Regards
Beg

Yes, I had noted that. Perhaps the informant wasn't quite right with the middle name. No parents names or anything like that on the death cert. the death was noted in the Wellington papers. I will check if any children were born after 1875, but I think that is a longshot! Found his wife seems to have arrived on the Oriental (New Plymouth) 1841, as a 10 year old with Ann (I think in early 30s off hand) and a younger sister, Jemima. No Boyd though

Interestingly enough, there was a second marriage with a child in 1878. Ordered the certificate.

Most annoying. The 1878 marriage cert from Wellington gives no parental or pace of birth details. Maybe the birth certificate will
