Patrick Butler & 84th
« on: Monday 26 August 13 08:35 BST (UK) »
HI
I need help finding Patrick Butler army records enlisted in the 84th please
I have 2 births found in the British Nationals Armed Forces Births listed with the 84th.
Butler Ellen, 84th foot, Secunderabad, Indian Subcontinent, 1848 (certificate: father Patrick, Mother Honorah)
Butler Emilia, 84th foot, Trichinopoly, Indian Subcontinent, 1853 (familysearch: father Patrick, mother Honora)
I have also found potentially 5 other Butler births with the 84th regiment in India & Burma (1844-56) and equally marriages for them all in India & Burma (1861-69).
-
also another thought, if he wasn't in the army what other job could he have and be moving around with the 84th to have his children registered with them?
Any help gratefully appreciated

The 84th were in the East Indies from 1842 to 1859. I cannot find his record on Findmypast, nor in the Mutiny medal rolls. So he could have died before May 1857, or he transferred to another regiment and is indexed under that, or he was discharged without a pension. It is a common name.

The best way to research him would be to look at the muster rolls in the National Archives, starting with 1853 and working forwards until he dies; is discharged; or is transferred to another regiment.

Ok so I tried looking for muster rolls in the National Archives and that website has beaten me hands down. I have read the guides and clicked links and cannot find a thing, I just go around in circles. Start at 1853, I cant even find it yet alone look through a list. I live in Germany and only have access to records online.
Can anybody help please.

Hi

Unfortunately you cannot see the Muster Rolls online. They are not digitised. You have to visit the Archives in person and look at the originals. (Not helpful I know when you live in Germany)

More information about how to research and what is held is here
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/army-muster-1730-1898.htm

And a search of the relevant section and 84th brings up these:
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/s/res?_q=WO+12+84th

You then need to identify the ones you want to look at by looking at the dates covered (Just 1st Battalion in your case).

They say you can order copies to be copied and sent to you but it would be A LOT of pages and so very very expensive!

All ended up Ardwick, Manchester
