James CRABTREE b 1811 Scammonden
« on: Monday 26 August 13 00:22 BST (UK) »
I am looking for descendants of James Crabtree, cotton dyer.

James was born in 1811 in Scammonden. He married Alice (Dyson?). To my knowledge they only had one daughter, Elizabeth bc 1833. Elizabeth married Reuben Hirst in 1853 and they went on to have several children.

Alice died in 1881 and James died in 1890. They are buried in the churchyard of St Bartholomew, Deanhead.

If you are a descendant of James, please make contact.  :)

Hi Ruskie,

You might be relieved ( :'( :'() I'm not a descendant !  ;D

But - I wondered whether you'd seen this :

Christening, 25th January 1835
George Crabtree
Parents : James and Alice
Scammonden, Yorkshire

Their abode is given as Lockwood and at the time of the baptism James's occupation
was written as Labourer.

Could be a good chance there's a connection ?

Kind regards,

Pels. :) :)

Here's the above family in 1841 :

1841 census :
HO107/1274/9, Folio 14, Page 20

Yorkshire, Lockwood
Swan Lane

James Crabtree, 30, Dyer
Alice, 30
Elizabeth, 8
George, 6

All born in county.

And possibly written as 'Bratten'  ;)

Elizabeth married Reuben Hirst in 1853 and they went on to have several children.

To help verify, if you check Elizabeth and Reuben Hirst in 1861 :

RG9/3269, Folio 87, Page 13

The couple living in the next property are George and his wife, Ann Crabtree.

Pels. I am disappointed that you are not a descendant!

The odd thing about your reply is that I have already found out a little about the family and I WAS going to add that I was not after lookups. Then when I saw your reply I thought, oh no, I hope Pels hasn't gone to too much trouble because I already have the census information for the Crabtrees. However, one thing that was bothering me was that I couldn't find them in 1841 (I spent ages looking for them on Sunday!) - so, I obviously did not know of son George, nor did I see him living next door to the Hirsts in 1861! So you have perfectly filled in the blanks for me! Thank you.

As I believe there may be an Australian connection with a member of this family, and I discovered that Reuben Hirst became mayor of Huddersfield 1891-93 and died there in 1919, I now wonder if it was George and his family who went to Australia. I will do some investigating.  :)

I have lost George Crabtree and family after the 1881 census.

I think it actually could be one of the Hirsts who went to Australia ... so there are loads of children to follow up.

I think I might leave the search for the time being and just wait/hope to hear from a descendant.  :) I hope some day someone who does a search for "James Crabtree" (and is not looking for the attractive model by the same name who is at the top of google search results) finds this thread and contacts me.  :)

I have lost George Crabtree and family after the 1881 census.

In 1891 - George was Gorge :

RG12/3574, Folio 97, Page 11

And in 1901, if you search for Eva Crabtree, b.1868 in Huddersfield, she was
still living with her widowed father :

RG13/4109, Folio 137, Page 32

Thanks Pels! I did look for George going to Australia but couldn't find him ... because he didn't go!  ;D

I'm pretty sure I need to look at the Hirst children - think I'll find my answer there.  :)
