Irish Church Records

Does anyone know how complete the Irish church records are?

For instance, you may be able to find all the children, but no record of the parents marriage or birth records for either parent.

I have all the children for Denis Doran & Catherine Flatherty-(spelt different ways for each child).

The first child Sylvester was born 1855, 11 Jun,  Basin Lane, I have searched for a marriage both in the church records and on ancestry but nothing.  I also can't find a birth for either Denis or Catherine.  I have even checked rootireland.ie.

So in this case are these records missing because the church records are not complete?  In the case of the marriage I guess it could be that they were never married.
What is my best bet.  Write to the church where I think they may have been married in and ask them to search?

Does anyone know how complete are the rootsireland.ie records.  Has anyone found that the counties have missing records????? I know Dublin City is not on there and a couple of other odd counties.  So how complete are the ones they do have on-line?

They are still adding records, I had to go to our parish office recently and there was a guy from RootsIreland transcribing parish records there.
As for how far back they go depends on each church I think, you also have to remember Catholicism wasn't encouraged in Ireland it was only after Catholic Emancipation in the early 1800s that many of these churchs were built.
Church of Ireland have better records.

Have a read of this

Thanks for the link Sinann. I have noticed that COI even have some burial records.  I never though of looking at the COI records I just automatically go for the RC so thanks for bringing this up.  I'll let you know if I find anything.  Regards CC

Hi Eadaoin,  that's the problem I don't know what parish they would have been married in.  I guess I would start with St James as that is where their 1st born is baptized. CC

Hi

I don't know the up-to-date situation re your query but if it is of any help, St James's was the parish for Basin Lane, Kilmainham and Dolphins Barn. My gran was born in Kilmainham in 1867, I contacted the parish office in St James's and they gave me details of her entire family baptisms.

Hi C,
I too had this problem and not solved yet but at least i know why which could possibly apply in your case,my great grandfathers siblings appear on Irish Genealogy from 1845 to late 1850s in St Andrews,Dublin ,i could'nt understand why i could'nt find my great grandfathers birth 1839/40 until the 1901 census eventually came online and his place of birth was Carlow , i eventually stumbled upon his birth in Dunleckney in 1839 while helping out a fellow rootschatter on here.
So the scenario i have come up with is that my g g grandparents were married somewhere in Carlow 1834ish and most likely came to Dublin during the Famine where they lived out the rest of their lives.

Hi Cam,  thank you for your reply.  How did you contact the parish did you phone them, email them or send a letter.   I emailed them but got no response so I would be interested to know what you did.
Best Regards, Caroline

Hi D,  yes is it the weirdest thing you think you know for sure where they come from.  I don't know if I told you that through talking to a cousin of mine I discovered that I had the completely wrong family.  I had a Dublin born family only to find out that they were all actually born in Westmeath.  My cousin caught it on the census and took a trip up to Delvin in Westmeath and found them all.  we were both laughing because we had both done the same thing.  Now we have an issue with were our GGgrandmother came from because the census says Donegal.  so the search is on again.

Hope you're having a fine day in Dublin.  How are you finding the new GRO safe parking?
Regards C
