A bit more of the document would help to get a feel for the formation of letters but  initially I thought Stratford but a closer look indicates the final part of the word as .....side.  Are there no clues in the document that would give an idea as to whereabouts in London it might be?  What date are we looking at? A will of 1842 I looked at recently would suggest the first letter may be D.  What type of document is it?

It's the address of the father of an apprentice shown in an indenture of 1701. Looking at it again I wonder if it might be Ditchside? According to Strype's survey this would be Fleet Ditch?

Good, you are getting somewhere.  What was the occupation of the father and what is the occupation of the person to whom his son(?) was apprenticed?  And do you know where that is?  This, hopefully will narrow down where the place in question is.

I already know the family lived in Blackwell Hall Court in 1693 and in Haberdashers Square in 1714. These are both in Cripplegate so I presume they were still there in 1701. I just wanted to be sure about the word on the apprenticeship document. Barbara

Seems like you may have solved it.  I belong to a family history society and they have members who can decipher old writing.  Are you a member of one that could help you?  Joining would really help with this and other problems you may encounter.  Victor

Hi Barbara,

I think you may be right with Ditchside, but if it is the Fleet Ditch that would be in Farringdon Without, not in Cripplegate.

If you would still like further help or confirmation, can you post a bit more of the surrounding text please, for comparison of letter-forms?

ADDED - perhaps this thread relates to the same place ...

Very grateful for all your suggestions .  I made a visit to the local archaeological society last week and the librarian agrees that it looks like Ditchside. The actual indenture is mainly printed which is why I didn't post any more of the writing
I am still trying to decide which of the many ditches in Cripplegate  it is referring to. I suppose it might even be on the site of the old city ditch which was filled in in the 16th century? Thanks again.
